I knew it would happen sooner or later; left my keys on the seat, closed the door, was distracted for a minute and the keys were locked in the truck.
Can this auto lock be disabled?

Easiest and best solution IMO. Get a regular metal key cut for your truck (doesnt need to be chipped) and hide it somewhere under your truck. That way you can get in if need be.

If that's the only option, I guess that is what I'll have to do. I can't believe there's no way to disable it.
My friend had his 4Runner stolen while we were out surfing; key safety pinned to his towel on the beach.

Hide the spare key under BURRIED somewhere (above a gas tank, up in a frame rail etc etc). Best part of the metal blank key is its not chipped... and shouldn't be able to start the vehicle (i think all 2nd gen v6s were chipped?)

Almost as dumb as pinning them inside your boardshorts pocket and losing it in the ocean. It's a beach thing.

That must be an aftermarket Doo Dad as the 2nd Generation Tacoma does not have an "automatic locking feature ".

It will however lock back up IF you unlock the door and do not open it within a time limit it will re-lock on its own. If you open the door that re-lock is canceled.

But if you had the door open and tossed the keys on the seat and only closed the door it cannot lock by itself.

The above is true for my '15 as well. Must be a way to defeat that on the newer ones.

That's exactly what happened. Keys were on front seat, closed the door and the doors locked the keys inside. No aftermarket alarm.

If the truck locked the doors after you closed the door, there's either something wrong with your truck or you have an aftermarket alarm. As mentioned above, the only factory self locking feature is if you unlock the doors with the key fob and don't open a door within ~30 seconds.

There is some other reason then, because that is not factory design and there is no autolock.

Were you driving the truck, then parked and turned it off, closed the doors and the keys were inside? Or did you go out to your parked truck, unlock the door, opened the door and left your keys on the seat, and then it re-locked itself? That would help us diagnose.

If the latter scenario, then it is possible you have a faulty plunger switch on the door jam. If so, when you opened the door after unlocking, the truck didn't recognize that you opened the door (typically signaled by the interior dome light coming on). A bad switch would cause the doors to relock 30 seconds after unlocking. Certainly enough time for you to open the door, leave your keys on the seat, and close the door before relocking.

If the former scenario, then something weird happened, like you grazed the door lock switch before closing the door or something.

Let use know which scenario generated the problem.

Just put the key in a combination lockbox and stick it to the inside of the frame. Only $6: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Kidde-Stor-A-Key-Locking-Key-Safe-Charcoal-001859/202072799
Cut a metal key so it can open the door but won't start the engine.

But yeah figure out why you're getting the false autolocking to begin with. Faulty door switch. Aftermarket alarm you didn't know about. Whatever.

Parked and locked the truck with fob. Came back five minutes later, unlocked the truck, one click for driver door, I'm pretty sure. Left keys on passenger seat while looking in console. Spaced the keys and closed the door and walked away for a few minutes, that's all she wrote. AAA driver had the door open in 15 seconds.
The doors auto lock fast. I don't know exactly how long, from the doors to the tailgate and back. I will check it out because this faulty switch scenario sounds reasonable:

The truck has a Sony stereo, I will double check for security features. Knowing the truck locks like this, I always have the keys in my hand when I exit the truck, I slipped up.

Sorry and not trying to be an ass about it, but that is Un-Possible without a malfunction such as the plunger switch as mentioned above.

Maybe as a reflex action you locked it and don't remember.

No worries. It's been like this since I bought it, I thought it was normal. Stupid, but normal.

If it has done this since you bought it, it would seem normal and you wouldn't know.

Check the door switch and make sure it works. Does the dome light come on when you open the door?

It looks like almost everybody is right. A quick series of testing indicates this door locking deal happens randomly, so a faulty switch seems to be a likely cause.
Probably have a look at the drivers side door plunger switch, seems most likely to wear out first, break out the multimeter and find out what's going on. At any level, intermittent electrical problems are always a joy.
