I finally got around to doing this mod today. If you're looking for a way to disable the chime on an as-needed basis this is a possibility.

I added a switch which esentially blocks the signal indicating the driver door is open. When the added switch is in the closed position the driver door chime is back to normal/factory mode.

From the factory the signal from the driver door is shorted to battery negative/chassis when the door is open and is an open circuit when the driver door is closed. That meant the added switch needs to be placed in series with the driver door switch. Originally I thought the switch could be added in parallel between the signal from the factory door switch and the chassis but I determined that was incorrect after doing a continuity check with my multimeter.

There were three places I considered adding the switch:
    1) Above the driver door switch. I decided against this since I didn't want to drill into metal. If you're comfortable doing this it would be the easiest solution from a wiring standpoint.
    2) On the plastic panel near the driver seatbelt. I looked behind the panel and there were lots of mechanical/moving parts back there where the wires could get pinched or pulled so that location was out.
    3) Somewhere on the dash. I opted to place the switch next to the TPMS button.

    Where to tap the wire:
The green wire with the yellow stripe starts at the driver door switch, goes down to the floor, runs underneath the driver door sill cover, and eventually ends up at the fuse panel behind the coin tray. It's a straight run with connectors only at the driver door switch and at the fuse panel.

The two places where I considered tapping into the wire was under the door sill cover and near the connector at the fuse panel. I opted to make the splices near the fuse panel connector.

Drive side door switch. My neighbor added the bypass switch (on his Tunrda) directly above this switch.

Back side of dash with switch installed. Originally I hadn't planned on taking off the dash to do this install. If I had I would have been able to better line up the switch between the dash support grids. I had to cut away one of the grids to spin the locking nut.

This is where the green wire with yellow stripe runs in the driver door sill area. This is one possible point to splice into it if you don't want to splice at the fuse panel connector.

What's behind the dashboard (left of steering wheel). The green wire with yellow stripe gets cut and butt-spliced to the new switch. See two red butt-splices in the bottom left corner of photo. Ignore the other butt splices and fuse taps (leftovers from removal of Karr "alarm" system). Additional wiring on right side along with green connector in middle is from bed lights.

The connector where the green wire with yellow stripe was butt-spliced is the white connector directly left of the two 10 amp fuses. I put nylon mesh wire braid over the wires to protect them from rubbing since I had to strip back some of the electrical tape from the factory wire bundle.

The new switch. It appears I need to rotate it a bit.

Hate to be a thread necro but our new (old) 2008 Tacoma does not chime when the key is in the ignition and I cannot get it into key fob programming mode (never toggles the door locks as the last step). Anyone know if doing any of the above mods disables or breaks the fob programming? I haven't checked the door switch to see if its been removed or the disconnect under the steering column, will check those tomorrow, but was just wondering.

*Edit* I couldn't wait, I went out and checked and sure enough the door switch was there but the connector was removed. I plugged it back in and was able to program two new fobs. Thanks for the info on this thread, much appreciate!
