I have a 2000 with power door locks and power windows.

Last fall, I adopted a dog. (Awww!) This was not an issue until the nicer weather began. When my dog rides with me, he is in the passenger seat and of course, he likes having his head out the window. This requires him having his front paws on the arm rest. Depending on how he is standing, I can hear the door lock activate occasionally. I've not seen the window operate, but of course him standing on the window switch would just make it try to go down more.

So, my first question is concerning the controls. Is there an adverse effect of constantly pressing on the controls, other than the obvious wear and tear? What happens to the window motor if you just keep the switch pressed after it has traveled full range?

My second question if if anyone had come up with a way to disable both the window and door lock controls. Yes, I know I have the window disable on my panel, and that is fine for the window controls. Is there a way to do the same for the door locks?

One of the things I don't like about the window disable is that it disables my controls too. I've seen in other vehicles where disabling the passenger's controls still allows the driver's controls to work, but this isn't the case with Tacomas. My ideal set up would be to have a switch on my door that would disable the passenger's controls but still leave my controls working. Has anyone tried that?

Yes, I know the most simple solution would to keep him in the rear of the cab, but I often have enough junk back there that there is no room for him. And, I could come up with some sort of cover for the passenger arm rest that would cover the switches, but I'm having a hard time seeing how to secure that and still make it easy to remove when my wife rides with me.

I can't be the first person to have this issue. Someone smarter than me must have solved this issue.

devvinzz1, can you give more details? Where is the switch? How are you controlling both circuits?

in the drivers door wiring harness, the two main wires are the big blue wire with the red stripe is the main power and the big white wire with the black strip is the main ground wire for both the locks and the windows. if you cut either wire down near the kick panel plug and add a switch on that wire it will disable both the windows and the door locks. they might have wires spliced in along the wiring harness, especially for the ground wire, so don't tap in at the switch plug or it may not work.

I think the switch has an internal "limiter" to cut power so as not burn up the motors but if you hold down the button long enough it "could" damage the motor over time. the only way to know for sure is with everything still plugged in, use a test meter and hold the button and see if it keeps getting power all the time.

devinzz1: Yeah, that is exactly what I am looking for. Just have to figure out how to do it.

Keakar: Thank you for the information. I'll have to take my door apart to see how to do it best.
