Yep, it's a fact. and yes the paint is bad. That's why I opted for the base model with the unpainted bumper.

the textured paint on the rockers are not what is commonly referred to as paint "orange peel"

that texture is, of course, intentional

"orange peel" is a result of water borne paints currently used on most new vehicles. simular, but not as rough as the intentional textured lower parts of many cars/trucks.

orang peel also shows up more with certain lighting (garage flourescent is worse)...and on certain colors, darker non metallic colors being worse.

I'm all for saving the enviorment (the reason for the move to water borns paints)...but when one buys a 60 thousand dollar Corvette...you really don't expect the paint finish to look like football.

Does the white hold up any better?

Our 09 corolla (red) looks terrible scratches everywhere and after some seagull shit on the hood it ate right through the clear coat.

My 06 tundra was the same way the front bumper looked sandblasted and numerous chips all over.

Mine is brutal too. Has scratches from people's fingernails opening the door. Took my first off road trip, and it looks like it was keyed, yet everyone else's looked fine. Talked to a friend who does bodywork, he said that the cars that were a few years older weren't as bad because the paint gets tougher as it ages.

I just bought a polisher/grinder for half-price. I'm going to learn to do detail work I guess.

    I don't disagree w/ this ^^^

also, auto manufacturers use robots to paint...and rarely sand between color and clear coats. many good body shops do.

I've seen pro paint jobs out of shops that were nothing short of spectacular. of course...a car like that is a garage/trailer queen.

My Silver Streak Mica is good. 06 Access Cab 4wd with 206,000km. Just small chips here and there, but its a truck, not a mall cruiser.

Seriously. My truck was swirled up by the dealership during the delivery process. I did a light cut w/ Meguiar's Ultimate Compound and followed up with glaze and wax. That lasted about 4 washes

I NEVER allow a dealership to PDI my new vehicles (at least not the clean-up part)

I can remove stickers and wash the car TYVM.

you do realize...the lot jockeys who do this are at the bottom of the ladder at dealerships...
probably was delivering pizza the week before and has probably never owned a car that actually has shine left on the paint...
and is the guy who makes the oil change guy feel like he's "made it" in the world of dealership service.

    Lol...

I have a small piece of trash that has been clear coated over and buffed all shiney on my pass b-pillar area, I can't believe Toyota let it stay, guess they didn't see it, The dealer said they would cover the repair, but the bed had to come off, I was like great. I didn't want the bed removed and then even more stuff damaged upset from that. I am trying to find a neat decal or vinyl decal that would just cover it...

No thanks, got a bed mat and cargo net at cost instead...

You are hard to believe and I would check your sources. Because this ^ is false. A dealer gets paid by the manufacture to do a PDI. And most lot boys do not do them. Here at ford, techs must complete the PDI with in 45mins.

Lot boys are not at the bottom of the ladder. they are responsible for checking the cars off the truck and moving them around the lot. Lot boys do a ton of work don't put some one at the bottom of the ladder if you don't know what your talking about.

I don't have an issue with a dealership having the techs do the mechanical part of PDI. But just because a dealership gets paid to do a PDI...doesn't mean they do much. New cars don't require much right off the carrier.

But it is a FACT at least in my experience, that those who do final cleanup are the bottom of the ladder in dealership service depts. This doesn't mean they don't work hard.

Also a FACT...almost all of the new cars/trucks/motorcycles I have purchased...I have specifically told them NOT to do the clean up part. Inclucing my 6 week old new Tacoma.

I believe I may have misused the term PDI. Because most dealerships associate the cleanup part of delivery with "PDI"

    sorry for the error.
