LOL, hate to burst your bubble, married, full-time job, and have an infant. Just sleep less and you have more time.

Stop self-projecting and get out there.

Good point. Communication from the service writer and vehicle owner understanding what work is going to be performed is key. Case in point: I recently went in for my last Toyota Care service before it expired, they offered to do the 25k service because I already used the 20k, I specifically asked for oil change and tire rotation during this last visit and they said no problem on both requests. Get the car back about 1 hour later, the work order stated rotation but no oil change. I was told that the 25k service does not include oil change but only the rotation and since I have synthetic it should be 10k before changing it. I was actually cool with that but it was a strange interaction after the fact when I signed the work order thinking I was getting the oil changed. The service writer sorta acted like I was foolish for wanting one 5k later. I had to move on with my day but thought it was strange that they didn't tell me it wasn't included up front, and I would of gladly paid for the oil change while they had the truck... the main reason I drove 60 miles to the dealership.

Would we have been hearing about what a tremendously fantastic dealer this place was had to OP gotten what he asked for? Absolutely not.

Stealing is wrong, but if I place my wallet on a bench then hide in a bush, do I get to beat up the first guy who takes it? No, that's not how decent people behave.

The OP went fishing and went on a tirade when he caught something. Perhaps he should get a new hobby.

I’ve take my truck in for the recommended services but also do changes on my own halfway in between services. That way I know they’re getting done, possibly twice as often during break in!

One day you’ll find a smarter tech that loosens the screw enough to break the paint and put some marks on it so you actually think they did something. Hopefully no techs read that :p

I see fault on both sides as I read this. It sounds like OP was perhaps a bit preemptively condescending by basically setting a trap, then telling them he set a trap because he doesn't trust them. To them, the markers were in place for the sole purpose of calling them out.

On the other side of the coin, the service slip clearly and falsely says the work was done. Maybe they did it out of dishonesty or negligence, which is wrong. Maybe they did it to throw OP the bird, which is understandable.

If the service is not part of the free care plan, they should've explained that.

If OP had a concern that the trans or diff were underfilled from the factory (not unheard of), he should've explained that. Of course a tech is going to assume the fluid id fine if there is no sign of a leak. If you politely explain that you want it checked for piece of mind, though, he might be more obliged to humor you (for additional charge, i assume).

Edit: i should add that I usually let my truck warm up considerably before I drive it. Recently, i didnt have time to warm it up in 0°F weather, and I noticed some odd trans behavior similar to the symptoms of low trans fluid. Hmmmmmmmmmm

o_O I know the automatic is different so I can't speak to that, but the diffs and t-case are real easy to check.
    1. On level ground, take the fill plug out.
    2. If fluid comes dribbling out, put the plug back in you're good.
    3. If no fluid comes out, stick a fanger in the hole. If it's ~1/4" or less from the bottom of the hole it's full, If not it's low.

I only add you catch more flys with honey… that’s how it goes right?

I gave my service adviser or whatever you call them a cigar on the last visit and I talk to him like a friend. On the previous visits he had no problem getting the tech to change settings via techstream. Granted thats all I wanted to have done since I did my own oil change. They did rotate the tires (I did mark it but didn’t say I did as a matter of fact to check they did it). They did scratch and chip every wheel but the service manager replaced them without a fight and he put his most trusted guy (the only 1 with the nylon sleeve) on the replacements. Not a mark and truck drove better than before (must of been a balance problem on original set). Was going to tip this guy 20 on the next visit.

    Only if you're lucky.

I wasn't checking fluids in my wife's highlander during the ToyotaCare (shame on me).

After ToyotaCare was over I was checking things before a trip and noticed the coolant reservor was empty. Just had a slight wet spot at the bottom. I bought some approved collant and filled it to the correct level. The coolant level has not budged since then. If the coolant leaked out or was burned, it would continue to lose coolant, because those types of issues don't go away on their own. So the obvious explanation is that they didn't get all the air out of the system on the assembly line, and the dealer didn't catch it during dealer prep, or any of the ToyotaCare checkups.

I didn't contact the dealer to rant about it. But if buy another car from them, I'll wait for the sales guy to be convincing me of what a great deal I'm getting and everything that's included. When he mentions the free maintenance, I'll say "oh yeah, that reminds me: you owe me a jug of coolant". It should be good for keeping the sales guy on his toes and off his game.

I agree with you, if it says it on the invoice it should have been done. If nothing else, you would now assume it was and perhaps miss a service date in the future for instance.

*service writer* So I see you're a Tacomaworld member *rolleyes*
Let me give you this latte half caf non GMO cappuccino and lead you to the crying room.

Our tech will find that intermittent rattle that you hear only during full moons while driving on RV park gravel parking lots while pretending you're driving the Yukon trail. Right this way.
