A simple binding contract will assure you of receiving the vehicle. Handshakes, verbals are as useful as a screen door on a submarine.

If the contract is breached, then you have legal footing.

Back in 1986 I went through all the pre sale paperwork with a Toyota dealer in the Albany NY area. Had the truck picked out and filled out the financing paperwork. Told the salesman let’s do it so he went to the sales manager and came back telling me the truck was already sold. Classic bait and switch.

They had plenty of trucks on the lot but all were optioned out with dealer add ons for more bucks. I was so turned off by it I said never mind and went home. Ended up rebuilding a wrecked Nissan for a daily.

I’m glad I didn’t buy the new Toyota. As a daily driver it would have rotted away in a few years from what I saw over time.

I guess dealerships will always be a bit shady.

This is all the more reason why the dealership model as we know it really needs to change. I've never understood why it's necessary, even expected to haggle over the price of a brand-new vehicle. On a used vehicle I get it as there are items which may need to be addressed such as worn tires, brakes, etc.

Most of the vehicles I've bought have been used and have been haggled over. My new vehicles (mostly Motorcycles and my Taco) I simply contacted a few local dealers either via their Internet department or even (gasp) over the phone. Got their best OTD price for what I wanted and the dealer with the lowest price for what I wanted got my business. If the details of that sale or the price changed when I got to the dealership then I walk.

This is just my opinion but I think some people get screwed by dealerships because they want to play games. I don't. My time is valuable and I don't want to waste it. I make it clear from the start what I want, the package(s) I want with it and I have in my mind what a fair price for it is. I have the $$ or financing all ready to go. Quick and simple. I don't waver on what I want ("For another 5K we could get you in that CPO Tundra over there"). When I bought my Taco I had a Salesman which had the same attitude as me and the whole process was very smooth and quick.

Before I make a large purchase I research the heck out of it so my mind is made-up. I approached buying my house in much the same way. No emotion, just facts. I can get giddy and silly (and generally do) after the deal is done.

Congrats. I hope the dealership you chose treats you right. What did you end up ordering?

I would have been PO'ed as well but I've always been quick on my feet. I've been messed so much I don't feel bad anymore doing alitlle payback.

    1. Ordered Chevy once. They never ordered it and jerked me around. I said I knew the VP of Chevy and they laughed. Fortunately, my dad did and the VP provided the dealership a letter. (Order time was 3 weeks instead of 10)

I would have said sure I'll pay more. What will it take? Hows $500 and see what the other person comes back with. If its more, then lets try again. I'll go as high as needed. I want the truck. OK, you are the high bidder. Great. Can I test drive the truck.... jerk them around let the other bidder leave, and/or get pissed off. Then just say well, I changed my mind. I'm only willing to pay what we agreed. Are we good? Yes or No.

Shit, wish you were closer to Canada. I hate hearing about scummy dealerships, because it ruins the reputation of the good ones too. If you need help with anything dealer related, reach out, and I can try and help the best I can. Worked at a Toyota dealership and know all the ins and outs of the place.

Someday this crazy market will swing the other way. When it does, that's when you revive your story. That's when you tell the very few buyers of a full lot of trucks how these A-holes acted. Someday they'll need us and we won't be there. It will be the honest ones that people remember. At least that's how I hope it goes down.

Once you're in your new truck you'll forget all about Camelback, be sure to posts pics.

And don't forget to get right over to the dealership as soon as the truck comes in.

This post brings me PTSD from countless hours wasted at dealerships for various reasons. This is why Carvana & Vroom are doing so well. If they cut the BS and fired all the finance managers, they could probably improve their bottom line and keep the customers happy at the same time. What a concept.

Haven't read all the posts in this thread. Over 20 years ago I had a problem dealing with the same dealership. Haven't been back since clearing it up. Figured they had changed their ways, so I did not contribute to this thread. Maybe they haven't.

Camelback sucks. I got a bait and switch from them on my 21 Tundra TRD Pro. Advertised price was "an error" per the sales manager. Admittedly, it would have made this the lowest priced Lunar Rock DC TRD Pro in the country so maybe it was an error. Either way, I did end up purchasing the vehicle for straight MSRP as this was still less than Lunar Rock TRD Pros, especially double cabs, were going for at the time.

Forget BBB, file a consumer complaint with the Arizona Attorney General. I know from experience that they legitimately investigate every complaint.

Saturn had a no haggle/BS and building a brand community model. While there were many basic issues that caused Saturn to fail, that was one of the things that worked. In order to do something like that Toyota would have to get the distributors and dealerships to go along, and I can't see that happening anytime soon. Even when local dealerships try the no haggle/transparency model as a marketing plan, no one believes it. I agree 100% it would be a wonderful concept, but I think it's right up there on the possibility scale with world peace.

I don't know, I dealt with Hendrick Toyota in Wilmington NC, they offered me a price over the phone for my 2016 SR5 based entirely on mileage and my physical description, they locked me in on a truck from the factory, I put down a $1000 deposit. My salesman sent me regular emails when the estimated date changed a few times, both farther out and sooner. Ended up showing up about a week after initial estimate. Price on new truck was exactly what we discussed, they gave me what they offered over the phone without any haggling we signed the paperwork and I drove out with my truck.

Rock solid experience, I also bought my 2016 from them. I've since moved 300 miles across the state since I purchased my 16 but went back to them because they were a good dealership the first time. I'll go back to them for a third if I decide to trade again or buy another.

It's too bad all dealerships aren't like that.

    Sorry OP.

Noted for the future…that’s the third-closest Toyota dealership to me. The other two I go to from time to time for parts and have to beat the salespeople away on the way in. The closest one convinced me not to buy a 3rd Gen a few years ago because they were so ridiculously dishonest.

If you're interested I can give you my salesman's name, he's an older guy that's been in the business for a long time but he's not a truck guy. I ended up teaching him quite a bit because I had done my research and knew what I wanted and what I could get. They locked down an allocation and got my truck for me. They sell so many vehicles they don't have time to screw around, they'll make more in monthly sales bonuses than they will in commission, it's about getting a customer what they want and making the deal. Hendrick also has like 180 dealerships around the country so if you buy any of their Hendrick care extras you can get them done at any Hendrick dealership.

Charles Maund Toyota in Austin was amazing when I bought mine in August of last year. We were right in the middle of refinancing our house and of course didn’t want to buy another car until after that was done so our salesmen asked for a $500 deposit and he held the truck we chose from the lot for around 3 weeks until our refi went through. I can’t say anything but good things about Charles Maund. Oh and we did most everything over the internet and spent a total of around an hour in the actual building.
