How about people that go and install turbos on engines that were never designed to have turbos ? At least Toyota has, I would think, redesigned their I4 to withstand the added heat and compression etc - maybe even over engineered them for reliability a Toyota selling point for decades. I am on the fence with the whole turbo/hybrid technology for now and really won't be in the market for a new car or truck for several years so I can afford to take a wait and see approach. But yeah, I really like my naturally aspirated V6 - actually if $$$$ were no object I would love to have a Tundra naturally aspirated V8 in my Tacoma just for the extra torque on the trail and to compensate for all the extra armor and BIG tires I would love to have . . . but all that is just fantasy on my budget.

Yes, the Tacoma V6 is a great truck but talking about winding out an engine towing? This what happens to both the 4.0 and 3.5L Tacoma when towing heavier loads. Higher rpms continuously and the engine gets worked.

    JFC,
Are people trying to tow 5k+ trailers with their Tacos?

I've towed our Off road OGT trailer more than 5,000 miles (2k-3k loaded) with my DCLB and it's been wonderful.
I don't think you have any idea what "terrible at towing" actually means.
Try towing something that is actually terrible at towing like my previous JKRU, and you will find the Taco tows really well.

Yes, but 2-3 thousand pounds is considerably lower than the max towing capacity, with a Tacoma having the towing package.

5,000 pounds is actually under the max towing capacity with the tow package, and a Tacoma does not do well with this much weight.

Most people don’t buy a Tacoma with the expectation that it does well towing 5,000 pounds, but it doesn’t change that a Taco struggles with this weight. In the mountains? Really bad.

I've towed many other heavier things besides our current OGT trailer including my brothers fairly loaded 5,100 lb enclosed cargo and it did just fine, including up the pass in CO, especially when in manual mode, 3-4. Certainly no worse than any other vehicle I've owned, and considerably better than some.

Again, the point is, if you are realistic in any capacity about your towing the Tacoma does just fine, and having done a considerable amount of towing, those are facts.
Try towing something even remotely close the the towing capacity on a JKRU and you will definitely find out the meaning of "real bad". The Tacoma isn't the world's best towing platform, but it certainly isn't anything remotely close to "real bad".

Can’t argue with your experience. Will have to wait and see what towing reports are like with the new turbo.

I'm definitely not saying the Tacoma is the perfect towing platform and certainly has issues loaded up +5000 lbs going up the mountain pass, but I've found that I don't even need to keep it in man 3 or 4 going up the pass now that I have an OTT tune.
Again, far from perfect, but once you experience a vehicle that is truly terrible at towing like my JKRU was, that had similar HP numbers and included a manual trans, you really dont see the Taco as being that bad.
Would I choose something different if I regularly hauled my brothers dual axle box trailer that was over 5000lbs? Yes, for sure. But if you stick to realistic towing numbers the Taco does just fine.

Yeah, I know what you mean for sure. I have a 2012 second gen, just thought it was working hard to tow but can still get it done.

Tell me about the OTT tune. I have a buddy with a 2022 Taco and just told him about the possibility of a tune.

Whole. Different. Truck. Literally the way it should have been from the factory, and has fixed nearly everything I had issue with in the 3rd gen power train.

I guess it would really depend on what v8 and I6
I’d gladly take the b58 in a Tacoma, maybe even over the tundra 5.7

I've taken two long trips with my brother......
One with his 2018 WK2 towing a large pop up, and one with his 2021 (2022?) WL towing a 5k+ trailer, both with Hemis
The first trip I had a smaller trailer towed by my JKRU.
The 2nd trip I had my DCLB towing our 3200(ish) OGT off road trailer.

On both occasions he got better gas milage than me.
    :confused::(

The 4.7L v8 out of the 4G 4Runner would be awesome. Maybe updated.

I’m admittedly biased here, but a B58 Tacoma would be one of the most rad machines on the road. But I wouldn’t kick that 5.7 out from the engine bay.

And while we’re talking about two things that will never happen, give me a stick with either. Thank you.

I I thought about it when replacing my engine, but its not worth the trouble for such low power gains especially being 200 lbs heavier. I dont know for sure how wiring would be as I don't have the experience but I imagine the only good thing about the 4.7 would be that it might be very plug and play especially if you bought a totaled 4runner to pull everything out of.
