I have a 2020 TRD OR. I have had distance to empty readings from 288 miles to 427 miles. At the time I didn't pay attention to the driving circumstances. Recently I have been trying to figure out the specific manner in which it is calculated.

First attempt made sure the last 5 recorded trips in the "trip information" averaged 20mpg plus. Figured "distance to empty" might be the average of those 5 trips. Nope. Filled up and got 310 miles to empty.

Second attempt I read in this forum that "distance to empty" is calculated based on the last 20 miles or so of mpg. So I ran 30 miles on the highway only and pulled over to fill up averaging 25 mpg. Only got 317 miles "distance to empty."

Somehow this "distance to empty" calculation is stuck on my truck getting approximately 15 mpg.

Came across a Ford Motor Company patent from the 1990s and they calculated distance to empty based on the past 20 miles or so of mpg.

Anyone know the calculation for "distance to empty?"

A zillion per gallon. I look for any excuse to drive this truck and take it on road trips.

I always assumed it had something to do with your mph (not mpg) at a particular moment in time. Like, if you’re going 70mph for several minutes, your distance to empty will be much less than if you were doing 50mph for that same length of time.

I know that’s not the whole picture. But must be a part of the equation?

I tried one more time today on a country drive.

    28.2mpg, 34 miles, 45-50mph on cruise control.

Pulled off the road straight into a gas station and filled up with half a tank remaining.

New “Distance to Empty” on a full tank read 317 miles.

    Makes no sense.

Distance to empty is not a calculation, it is an algorithm based on many different variables like speed and engine load. In addition, it is slow to update because who wants a gauge that goes from 212 to 320 to 150 to 500 all in 20 seconds?
You can fill up and it will say 312 miles and stay there for several miles, depending on current conditions. It is most inaccurate with a full tank and accurate as it approaches zero.

Distance to empty also doesn’t calculate the last 2 gallons you have when it reaches 0.

    Less than 15mpg?
I'm still on my first of gas that the dealer filled. So interested in knowing what the computer indicates.

I’ve had my warning light come on at 15 miles left to empty. Only had it come on 3 times

Can confirm this. When it says zero miles to empty and I fill up at the pump, I can get around 19 gals into the tank. Capacity for the tank is 21.1 gals.
