Regardless, most "in tank" modern pumps are close to the top anyway. Just one of those urban myths.

The first vehicle I owned with digital "miles to empty" number would regularly read negative, -35 was my usual fillup point. (1998 Audi)
As others have said, 0 is simply the reserve point.

Somewhere I have seen it say: "21.1 gal (reference)" as if the capacity and the usable volume are different.

Having said that, I once filled over 21.1 gal.

It's shows zero miles / Kms with 2 gallons left or 8L.

It is accurate every time for me.

Don't run it lower or else you end up screwing up your direct injection HP pump, which needs the circulation to keep it cool. If you're in a bad situation that requires you to run it down obviously do it.

I'm notorious for running low gas. I have got down to 2 miles before topping it off and was very close to being correct.

The pump being at the top of the tank has nothing at all to do with it needing to be cooled. This is uneducated people talking about things they don't know. It's the fuel running through the pump that keeps it cool. Pumps 101

When you learn about diesel fuel injection let me know. I think my marine engineering out weighs your YouTube certificate you carry.

Two fuel pumps. One in tank one in engine. If you believe a low pressure fuel pump can actually overcome the pressure inside the combustion chamber as it's directly injected ... you sir need to do some learning. @weefek

When we go on trips I get a big kick out of passing gas stations after the light comes on. Drives my wife nuts.

Haha...I love playing "The Gas Game" as well when traveling! Only lost once unfortunately it was in the snow at 4am before the nearest gas station was open for business. It was a tough loss

An unusually high amount of pinstriping.
I am not sure, but I think it uses an average to calculate fuel range. I know on my 2005 F250 it uses the past 500 miles to calculate the fuel range. I am guessing that the Tacoma is similar. I had the same experience not long after getting the Tacoma. It showed "Please refuel" for about 10 miles before I could get to a gas station. I only put in 17 gallons of fuel in it. Now that there is almost 24,000 miles on the truck it seams to be a little more accurate.

I usually fill mine up at about the 1/4 tank mark, but checking at that point mileage driven vs. What is shows full, mine is always 40 to 50 miles off as well.

For what it's worth personally I never let my tank go below 1/4 , after it gets below 1/2 tank close to 1/3 , I make the effort to top it off !

These and many modern day vehicles determine DTE or distance until empty based on your driving patterns. If you do more driving on the highway vs. City driving, your dte will be naturally higher as the truck is more often in a state of constant motion than stop and go situations. The same applies vice versa. The other way of determining dte is usually based upon fuel injector pulse width modulation which the dash instrument cluster will usually be able to be fed that information via the OBD II PCM CAN data. Not new tech at all, and as usual dte will vary from user to user. Amounts are never accurate as your right foot and pumping losses are a constant changing input in which the PCM can never update quick enough to be able to reflect on the dash instrument cluster. Hopefully this answers yours and any of the other users questions.

My best advice to all of you is to Do what you can within your power (I understand sometimes you cannot get to the station quick enough) to not run the fuel tank until the light triggers on. Less worry, less stress.

am I the only one that hits the gas station once my truck drops below 3/4 of a tank?

Toyota sets your "0" point to be when you have ~2 gallons left. My Toyota sienna minivan is the same way. Try resetting your TripB counter when your truck tells you to please refill and drive 2x your average mgp. You'll get close to 21 gallons for that fill.
Might want to fill up a gas can before you do it...

Isn't the Gen 3 constantly recalculating DTE based on current driving conditions? Before buying my TRD Sport, I owned a 2015 Subaru Outback with the premium package. The Subaru's DTE # would change with the driving conditions. For example, it might show 385 miles DTE if I'd been city driving since the gas-up; but when I hit the freeway, that number might jump up by 30, 40, or 50 more miles. I expected my '17 TRD to do the same, but all of my driving has been in-city since I acquired it and I haven't tested whether it could change upwards when I hit the interstate.

This is normal...I've run both of my cars 30+ miles past it saying 0 miles and I'm pretty sure they both had another gallon or so in them. I can't say this for certain but I always thought it was by design. The extra 2-3 gallons or whatever it is that is on the tank once it says 0 miles is supposed to be for emergencies or whatever.

Exactly, you don't want to run completely dry and damage the fuel pump. Same way with toyota tundras as well.

Typically most reserve indicators come on at 10-15% of tank capacity.

I put 20.38 gallons in the other day... with driving about 15 miles after I hit 0 miles to empty. Long story short, mountains and a 40 mph head wind killed my gas mileage. I had 60 miles to empty according to the computer when I got on the highway and 40 miles till the next gas station and barely made it thanks to the wind
