The fuel pump is cooled by the fuel flowing through it. If the fuel level is allowed to get too low too often eventually it will cook the fuel pump.

These Tacomas have quite a bit of fuel in them when that light comes on and when the needle is on the empty line. I used to push the limit every so often in my company trucks (1995 and 2005 Tacomas). The needle will go well below E on the gauge, about a 1/4 tank below. Driving over 30K miles a year got me into areas where there wasn't a gas station and I wasn't prepared.

    Yep.

Anywhere from 17-18 gallons on a fill up after the light comes on.

I find that the three gallon is roughly correct the few times my fuel light has come on. The only way to know for sure is to carry a can of gasoline and drive it until it runs out. Then you will know for sure.

Mine is about 3 gall after light come on. Wife's Mini has a 13.2 gal tank. It has a completely inaccurate gas gauge. indicates 1/2 tank you put in anywhere for 5 to 9 gallons. so she never runs down past 1/2 tank.

Yup, about 3 US gal is close...that being said, it costs nothing more to keep them running on the high side of the tank as opposed to the low side. (could be my motorcycle habit popping in though).

For your specific truck l would suggest driving until your low fuel light comes on. Them gas up until fill. Subtracting the fuel pumped in from the tanks capacity. Do this a couple tines,,and you'll determine when exactly your low fuel light triggers

Ive gone at least 25-30 miles back roads multiple times. Thats usually me having the light come on on the way to work, and coming home as well and filling up in town. Never gone past that. I dont think ive ever filled more than 18.5 gallons. I have no idea where you start sputtering. Its a valid question, everyone forgets to look at the gas sometimes.

From here, it took 19.439 gal to fill up.

So I still had a little left.

My gauge doesn't show as low as yours, @Naveronski, when the light comes on. My truck took 20.76 gallons (out of a rated 21.1) in a fill up right as the light came on a month or so ago. That fill up was topped off, so let's say about 20.5 gallons to my light coming on. Either way, it's less than a gallon, and the gauge was just reading on the E tick mark.

My gauge is way too accurate, I guess. It won't likely tolerate any funny business fooling around with a few more miles...

once it drops below E and stops moving there is about 40 miles left to go

I get 420 miles in one tank and run below E all the time

My low fuel light came on before the needle had made it to "E." I drove for another 30 miles before refueling, and I seem to recall I was still a couple gallons short of whatever the tank capacity.

Why is that? I consistently add an extra 2 gallons past the first click, thus knowing my tank is completely full and as a result I get an accurate MPG accounting....or at least so it seems to me.

Sooner or later it'll cause your engine light to come on.
Used to do that to my Matrix. Then had to replace the steel rusted gas tank. Mechanic told me my charcoal filter was full of gas, from overfilling at the pump. That charcoal filter is supposed to catch fumes from the tank.
Many European cars say right at the fill up door, do not overfill, for that reason.
Hope I helped you, or somebody with this.

I can only put in 17-17.5 gallons when my light turns on, I consistently get 19.2-19.8 miles to the gallon, so I'd probably push it to 60 if I had to, but I usually fill up at the light or earlier.
