Exactly...right now that max is 99 weeks with extensions. That's almost 2 YEARS!

Personally, I think unemployment should be 6 months max, no extensions. It may sound a little cold hearted but if you can't find a job in 6 months you're not trying hard enough. I was out of work for 3 months when I was unemployed.

not spin, ...just expounding upon your claim of "that's how it works", ...well, ok, but there's always the fine print... i shouldn't have used the word "indefinite"... the presumption is that it's a stop-gap measure, not an entitlement like SS/medicare, etc...

yep, i shouldn't have used the word "indefinte"... but, it is not (shouldn't be) an entitlement, ...it's a stop-gap...

As long as you are entitled to pay into it , you should be entitled to draw from it

While they vary state by state...

The initial benefits are 26 weeks here in GA. Then you can apply for extensions that are 33 weeks.

It used to be 6 months on, 6 months off, until our lovely president and congress decided that they would just give it to you for 99 weeks straight for little to no effort.

I think if you are on unemployment, you need to be doing something to earn that money. 20-30 hours a week working on building roads, infrastructure updates, etc. Something to motivate you to go back and get a job.

the money that was "payed" into it was probably wasted on $16 muffins (ref to real case of fraud/waste/abuse here in US) and what not, but i digress... i think there is a mindset problem if one is to come to "expect" to be supported just because they payed into it?...

based on your mindset, shouldn't it be linearly "pro-rated" based on how-long you've payed into it? that's how it is w/ SS i believe... my generation has already come to see SS to be just another "tax" on our income, not an entitlement, as it's is going to be completely bankrupted before the time we can hopefully retire...

thats called a job...not unemployment insurance.

And most road work is done by private contractors...not the gov't. That would lead to unemployed people making employed people unemployed.

Plus the money you would use to commute would chip away at the meager money you get on unemployment....and taking away resources to go out and find another job.

Because of this ^^^ I have a feeling the guy is lying. He's not going to admit that his screw up is making him miserable. He's telling you guys he's got the easy life so it will get back to the person who fired him.

Unemployment is not passed out easily, it's usually used for lay offs. If you lose your job and file for unemployment, on the form it asks why you are not working. THEY WILL CONTACT YOUR LAST EMPLOYMENT and find out if you were laid off. In this case the place of employment CAN stipulate reasons to deny benefits. At that point the ex employee with have to arbitrate it through an interview. From there they will get back to the place of employment and make their decision from then on. The process can take a few weeks.

Point being , if you have to , by law , pay into the system , you ARE entitled to draw from it when you need it .

and again , nothing to do with abusing the system , that's another conversation

Correct, You would be surprised at the people I have done investigations on for stealing, I interview them, get a written confession that they stole, They're fired on the spot at the interview. They'll apply for unemployment then wonder why it got denied. We'll fax over the written statement of confession to the unemployment office and that shuts it down pretty quick :D

    ^^This!!

I was on unemployment for a few months after ending my contract with the Marine Corps. The thought of it is cool...get paid while you look for a job!! But in reality it effin sucked!! I'm currently working a 1yr contract and I pray I get converted to full time..I DO NOT want to go back on unemployment.

yes, but i hesitate to use the word entitlement in this context... i mean, this is more of a safety net that is designed for stop-gap, not sustained use, ...it becomes troubling in an unhealthy economy (like now), combined w loosening of constraints, plus a lacksadaisical state-of-mine (in ref to OP's friend/coworker)...

It's a safety net , that as a law abiding , tax paying , citizen , you are ENTITLED to draw from .
