Not sure if it's different down there , but here there are deductions from the employee's cheque and the employer also contributes ( 1.4 times the employee's deduction here )

In most states, only the employer pays into it. The employee pays indirectly through lower wages there just isn't a physical line item deduction in their paycheck.

OK well, turns out it must be a state by state by country basis.

It just baffles my mind that someone can consciously screw up (being drunk on the job) and still be entitled to unemployment! I thought unemployment was for those that got laid off because of down sizing, plant closing, etc.

Thats disgusting but whats really disgusting to me is the fact that Obama got a free 5 minute clip for himself during halftime of the NCAA National Championship game, where millions and millions of people are watching

Ok this will really piss you off then. My brother in-law is a first mate on Matson line container ship. They are union and work contracts. Usually three month deals, hard work and away from home, union rules keep them from taking contracts back to back. So they all collect unemployment half the year out of north or south Carolina, via the Internet. He makes like 140K, and draws unemployment half the year because their company structures it that way. Just because you pay into it doesn't mean it's yours, that is not the intended purpose, it's insurance, and people and especially company's shouldn't abuse it.
Just like car insurance, Abuse and fraud of the system raises the rates for everyone while the small few steal off the rest.
Ok my rant is done, I feel better!!!

A guy I know, and used to be friends with worked construction during the summer and would collect all winter. All the guys he worked with did it. A guy I used to work with got pissed at our boss and walked out. Screamed at him a little and bounced. A few days later unelmployemtn called, my boss told them what happened. The ex employee filed a grievance... AND WON. He claimed hostile work environment.
