Yep - looks much better without the front chinstrap and mud flaps.

I put mine on, no thanks. Prevents the rear quarter panels and underside of the car to be pelted by rocks and other shit. One of my favorite mods.

Those of us who live on dirt/gravel roads and where they spread tar and cover it with rock chips to resurface the roads know the value of mud flaps.

I get that. I’m from southern tier of ny.

But I would still take off those ugly things and layer up some protective vinyl
back there. Good thing we don’t share trucks.

Protective vinyl won't hold up to the amount of gravel spray unless you are mainly on pavement. I'd put my money on some Rokblokz! Thin and somewhat flexible for offroading.

I kept my factory flaps on but cut about 5" off them. Didn't like them hanging down to the pavement but appreciate the protection they give.

    No.

Although removing the trail squeegee is an improvement.

I removed my front mud flaps, due to rubbing. However, I kept my rears as a courtesy to other drivers who don't want to get pelted by rocks leaving my tire treads at mach 20... running large tread tires without mud flaps is kind of a dick move, IMO.

Me too, that's why mine went in the trash 11 years ago. Sorry, but I ain't buying that they offer any protection. At least 95% of the trucks on the road do NOT have mudflaps on them. I've been driving trucks since the 1970's and the Tacoma is the only vehicle I've ever owned that had flaps on it. The front ones broke off after 3 years and I just trashed all of them at that time. I drive about 1000 miles/year on dirt or gravel roads and have never had any body or paint damage on any vehicle even without the mud flaps. No damage from other vehicles with no flaps either.

If your tires are too wide to be covered by the fenders you're going to have issues and mud flaps won't help. If your tires fit inside the fenders you won't have any issues and mudflaps won't help.

I bought the Weathertechs immediately after driving on this road
    [IMG]

They look fine to me and block like 85% of the rocks and tar splatters

You don't even need to take them off. Wheeling anything harder than a forest service road will take them off for you.

I wonder if a lack of mudflaps has anything to do with the rusted rocker panels on pretty much every Chevy truck that's more than 10 years old.

It seems to me that a hunk of rubber between my tire and my paint is a pretty good way to keep rocks from chipping it. I'm not really sure how it could NOT help. :notsure:

But, I don't care what others do. I'm keeping my rears. I have sliders to deflect stuff from the front tires. I was keeping the fronts as well until they started getting in the way of my tires.

If I ever do get new flaps, besides the oem, I’m definitely going flexible. The oem ones are just stupid. I’m pretty sure I’m at least one state it’s illegal to not have them.
