DIY- Front Wheel Bearings

Same here buddy. Different brands made at different times...who knows.?.

I'm sure you are buying from the same source over and over so makes sense all of yours would be the same.

I didn't have to add any grease with mine. They were ready to go right out of the box. I got them from ebay.

 

Pack them the grease they come with is crap

from what others are saying in here it depends on the brand, but from people I personally know and trust you need to clean the shipping grease off and pack them yourself.

I purchased Moog wheel bearings and mine were also packed with "shipping grease"

BlueT has the link from the major manufacturers that states "they do not pre grease their bearings with bearing grease" it is shipping grease. Wish he was here cause I can't find it.

Well I never dug into this completely until tonight, but I really feel bad for anyone who has ever sent their truck to any shop who didn't put in bearing grease that didn't buy the whole assembly pre-installed. I found the link. Timken has NEVER packed their bearings with BEARING GREASE.

Do Timken® bearings come pre-lubricated?
Most Timken bearings are protected with a thin film preservative that, although excellent at preventing rust and corrosion, is not a lubricant. Because our preservative is compatible with most oils and greases, it is not necessary to clean the preservative off prior to adding lubricant. Timken also produces a wide range of special package bearing units that are "pre-lubricated" at the factory. These include "AP" Railroad bearings, automotive hub assemblies, housed units, wide inner ring ball bearings, pillow block units and some ball bearings. Because these units are pre-lubricated, it is not necessary to remove seals to add any additional grease.

Now I know why people are saying "my bearings only lasted 3k"

 

My question is, I bought a percision bearing complete w/ hub. How do you grease them? Are they already packed or do I need to tear the hub apart and repack the bearing?

 

I would think that you can just remove the old one and put the new one in. The reason I think that is because you bought a complete kit, not just the bearings. I only bought the bearings and had to get the old bearings pressed out and the new ones pressed in.

 

If your new assembly includes the hub actually pressed into the unit bearing -- as in you unbolt the old unit bearing assy with hub and bolt the new one in place and you're ready to go -- no pressing. Then you can't grease those bearings without pressing out the hub and pulling each bearing out the unitized assy.

 

Ive got 2 spare 4x4 hub assemblies with bearings on them (<1k miles) if anyone is interested. Great spares to have, just bolt the new assembly in when you need a wheel bearing, and have a new one swapped onto the hub!

 

Hey guys My bearings in my front left side have gone. I've Watched the video probably a dozen times but I am still left with a couple of questions.

Since I'm doing essentially what this guy did here:

and replacing the bearing module and the hub assembly so that I have a spare.

Now I must say my knowledge of mechanical parts isn't the greatest. (I'm a complete newb) and I just want to start learning about this and being able to take care of my own Truck and do some of the easier jobs myself. (you know, screw paying someone $60 an hour to change my oil or breaks)

So Here is the attached picutre of all the parts.
Some of my questions are:
1.) Do I have to press the OEM hub assembly into the Bearing module assembly? There is a brown teflon? ring inside the bearing module that kind of blocks the Oem assembly into the unit nicely does this come out?
2.) Will I require any grease for the reassembly part? C.tire mechanics told me that there is no need to press anything together. THis is just a double check with what he said since its hard to take the word of a mechanic who has clean hands

Yes you will need to press the new hub onto the bearing. That ring inside the bearing is to just hold the bearings in that unit so they don't fall out I believe. I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. As far as greasing goes. When I've done mine before I have pulled the ring out of the bearing and pulled those bearings out of that unit and greased them or atleast one of them I can't remember but you shouldn't have to do that. I think I did it as an extra step cause I got tired of changing it and wanted to do something different.

 

Correct, ring is just holding bearings in place. Be sure to apply some grease to the hub portion that presses in the bearing, it will make it easier for next time.

And I coulda saved you a bunch of coin on that pretty hub...and had the bearing on it already, lol. Good luck.

probably. this pressing thing is kind of a headache.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean here and it's one of the parts that i'm sort of confused on. Does the grease go into /around the inner circle on the bearing module? or do you mean around the shaft of the hub assembly (the part that sticks up?)

Since i've never done this before or anything really remotely mechanical. It may start to make much more sense once i get the hands on time with it.
