I use paper wheels attached to a bench grinder. It saves A LOT of time. There is a way to get a consistent angle using paper wheels Like 25 degrees bevel for kitchen knives 10-15 degrees bevel for super steel pocket knives.

I got really sick and tired of spending up to an hr sharpening my bk7, or my s30v steel blades. Takes way to damn long on a stone, plus if you want to sharpen a lawn mower blade or an axe head before doing a job, using paper wheels takes only seconds.

I use a cheap tri stone system I got from Lowes for $30 Using honing oil with it for touch ups on my pocket knives.

Can't believe no on has mentioned a Lansky Sharpening System. They work very well. Read nothing but great things about the Sharpmaker from Spidy. The paper wheel is what a lot of custom knife makers use, along with a one inch belt sander. Sounds crazy I know, but do some searches.

OK - forgive the newbie question, because these sharpening sets look fascinating and I've been gaining some interest in knives.

Are these sharpeners specialized for hunting and folding types of knives, or will they work just as well for a nice set of kitchen knives?

A lot of these systems seem to work with any type of blades.

Another vote for the lansky system and other jigs like it. Perfect angle every time. Although on double edged knives the clamp is difficult to keep in place. I do my hunting knives once a year and no problem running through elk. Same as any other wet or oil stone but you are not worried about shifting angles and making more work for yourself. I always test by shaving my arm and on most knives about 10-15 min.

I use a wet stone that was issued to my uncle in Vietnam when he was in the Navy and given to me, with about 10 swipes on the rough and fine sides with each side of the blade it'll cut the hair on your arm.

Agree on the double edged blades (tiny pocket knives as well). I've cut small sections from a bicycle inter tube, wrapped on the back side of the blade to give the clamp a little more holding power.

That's why the v sharp/ warthog sharpener is so nice. You can sharpen both sides of any blade in it including double sided blades without any hassle at all I also have the lansky system and have found the warthog sharpener to be the fastest. Just whip it out and start sliding The blade down the guide.same edge every time.

This is what I want. Holds the knife for you, holds the angle for you, but gives you something like 10-12 stones to work your way through for a great sharp knife.

I use one of those handle things with the V in it...got the small white sharpeners on each side....make sense?

Every time I use a kitchen knife I run it through that 10 times....the edge hasn't came off in 2 years on em.

On my pocket knife?? I take it to my dad LOL
