I will be curious what your measurements reveal. I love the idea of the fumoto valve but from the pics I saw it looked like it would prevent a thorough drain when I checked it out on my 1st gen Tacoma before I had my current 2nd gen.

Sadly, Austin isn’t what it used to be back in the day. Back then it was a fun town, everyone had fun, everyone was welcome, and no one pushed their beliefs on you, everyone just enjoyed the city and everything it had to offer.... now, well , now, it’s ummmm, let’s just say it’s not a very enjoyable town.

This is exactly what kept me from buying one!! Many will not agree, but it was enough for me to stick with the factory drain plug.

I would let my GF change my oil before I had the dealership touch my shit. No joke. She expressed interest last time I was prepping for mine so I ending up supervising her and walked her through it. Noone cares about your shit as much as you do. DIY FTW

If you don't want to go the whole 'grind down the threads' method, you can just do 2 'V' notches through the top 2-3 threads. Effectively allows the bottom morsel of oil to drain out. As others have stated before, I also drain my oil when the engine is hot (many a burnt knuckle on the bottom of the oil pan). After the engine's been running, any sludge that may have settled to the bottom of the pan that wasn't captured by the oil filter will still be in suspension and if I recall correctly, the viscosity of the oil allows for particle suspension for up to an hour after the engine has been shut down. Am I worried about the bottom 1/4 inch or so? not really since it's not really a lot of oil given the shape of the pan. Less than an ounce or two would be my guess. Hell, I close the fumoto when there's about 25 seconds between drips so the oil tank isn't completely empty. My thought process is that as long as I keep up with routine oil changes and change the oil filter after every oil change, I won't sweat the residual oil.

If you have interest in changing it yourself I say do it. I enjoy changing the oil in my cars. I turn on the garage music, crank up the fan and take a beer with me to get dirty. Changing the oil in my Taco is fast and simple. I have a Fumoto oil drain valve so I don't need any tools (no drain plug to loosen). The oil filter is only hand tight. I change the oil in my Rav4 and JX35 too, just as simple, but have the dealership change the oil in my Vette. I can't beat the dealership's cost for 10 quarts of synthetic and an oil filter.

I don't consider myself skilled but I could change the oil, so pretty much anyone can. Great write-ups give you the step-by-step instructions on TW.

No sir they don't. Perhaps a knockoff from you know where but not the Fumoto.

My wife is giving me a hard time for still sending samples to Blackstone on my 2014. In addition to that I keep one sample, in a Blackstone bottle, on the shelf in the garage from each oil change for future forensic investigation!

That must make for expensive oil changes.

I did it for the first time recently and it was incredibly simple. Didn't even need a jack.

I have always done my own oil changes for the main reason is I do not have the time to wait around in a lobby.
