Mine is pretty much all there now! Still need to make a fairing, hi-lift mounts, rotopax fuel, and add some camp lighting, but very happy with it. Stainless is an old kickplate from a door and is for attaching anything needed that doesn't fit between bars, roto will probably go up there.

Got any more photos of those traction board mounts? Are they locked? I currently have mine bungeed up there with a lock but hoping to do something a little more secure.

They are just bolted on, I could lock them with a cable I suppose.

Front are two long bolts through the stainless plate, back are two long carriage bolts with the heads ground so they slide into the track - Both front and back are nutted down so if the boards are off I just have 4 long studs sticking off the rack. Found two pieces of aluminum in my scrap pile that had a slot down the middle that was the perfect width and length for the studs of the traction boards - Would have fabricated something similar, but I got lucky. You could probably use wheel locks if you matched the bolt size. Or maybe a hitch lock.

    Questions:

Did you still go with 47” cross bars for the cab rack? Second, without a wind deflector do you get any whistling/noise at speeds?

    Yes, 47” wide.

I’ve noticed a ton more wind noise. So much noise that I may remove it until I fab some sort of wind deflector for it. Does anybody else notice a lot of wind noise? My wife rode in the back seat and said she couldn’t even hear us talking in the front seat it was so loud.

So I’ve been brainstorming the cab rack based on this thread for my 2010 double cab. My plan is to make the side rails out of steel instead of aluminum mainly Because I can weld it easier. But as I’ve taken measurements of the roof I came up with a few puzzling questions.

I purchased the 47 inch crossbars that everyone’s recommended and I find those to be a bit too long. For the rack to sit at the outside edge of the roof rain channel the bar should be about 44- 45 inches long. I think I might cut the bars shorter and re-thread the holes on the ends. Anybody have any suggestions or run into similar issues?

The second thing I noticed is the front threaded mounting points in the roof are further apart (left to right) compared to the rear mounting points in the roof. So if you wanted to the outside of your rack to lineup evenly with the outer edge of the rain channel then the rack would not be square but have a V-shape. The front of the rack would be wider than the rear. Maybe I’m overthinking it. But all these questions came up as I’m trying to come up with an easy way to fabricate mounting brackets to attach the rack to the roof.

My hope was that I can make a simple L-shaped bracket that would mounts to the roof. Then the inside of the side rails would sit against the outside of the L bracket and then I would just weld them on. But because the roof angles outward towards the front I don’t think that this would be an easy feat. Thoughts?

I believe the easiest solution will be to make a simple bracket that mounts to the roof and then the crossbars sit on top of that bracket. I would then screw the bracket into the underside of the crossbar utilizing the square nuts.

I apologize now for my brain overthinking. I try to remind myself that I’m not building a bridge

The rack will be square because the mounts slide inboard &/or outboard. The front mounts won't be slid in or out as far as the rear mounts.

Well here is my version for a SnugTop XTR . A lot of backyard engineering went into this . Just couldn’t find a rack or basket that would fit the bars on the shell right so I just made my own :) Still need to tweak it a bit but it’s functional
