DIY Replacing Driveshaft Center Bearing

Too far for me to lend a hand. I see no issue reusing the nut. I'm just not going to resuse it a second (or maybe 3rd) time.

 

After 15 years and 215,000 miles it was time for the new one. Got it done this morning. I would think there would be a better support bearing. I wonder how long it's going to last.

 

Im on my 4th support bearing. 2 and 3 were aftermarket and barely lasted 2 years each. 1st one was a Dorman, 2nd one was a ADPTY, or something like that. On 4th one, went back to OEM, under the Spicer brand. Big difference in the rubber structure.

 

I'm thinking of trying that polyurethane one I have heard of if I have to replace again. But there is some modifications that have to be done. My first one should have been changed long ago.

 

Hi everyone. I know this is an old thread, but I'm confused about the U-joints for my 05 Tacoma TRD Sport. Some say for 'rear' and others say nothing at all. Am I guessing correctly that only the rear is specific and the others are universal? Thanks

Anyone know the part number of the staked nut inside the yoke on the driveshaft? 2006 Prerunner short bed.

 

I replaced my center bearing but forgot to include the washers in the image below. Can anybody confirm if they are critical? Thanks for the help!

 

I took mine back apart and put the washer back in.. The one on my truck seemed hardened, made me think it was probably there for a reason.

 

I hate to say it because I know it is a lot of work for a washer, but I also vote to put it back in.

I'm having trouble finding part 5002007. Everyone seems to be sold out. People are wanting to sell me the other, 5002334, w/out the sealed bearing.

Does anyone know where to definitely get the correct part?

Oh, I wish I would have seen that. My google search found one in stock at a small shop w/ really sketchy ordering.. The kind of online shop I've had my CC info stolen from in the past... Basically just a form I filled out, and I think they process the order manually. But I went through w/ the order anyway. No emails or anything, and I don't expect one.. Hopefully the part just shows up in a few days.

Yeah probably will. I replaced my center support bearing about a year and half ago and mine looks way worse than this guy's. And it was a dorman from the auto parts store. About 35000 miles on it. Just about all the rubber is gone. I'm doing it this weekend with a used one until I can get one in. Yes. It's that bad!

 

I'm at about 2 years and 25k on the replacement Spicer that I put in and I'm starting to notice a more violent shake at certain speeds. I haven't done any troubleshooting yet like having the tires balanced or the alignment checked. Those are next steps along with checking the amount of play in the center support bearing. Before I consider replacing again, I'm gonna work on driveline angles and trying to remove as much of the shake from the driveshaft as possible.

 

I recently replaced my carrier bearing and have noticed a metallic rattle underneath at certain speeds, throttle inputs. Upon looking, the round dust shield that slide over the shaft against the carrier bearing are loose and rattling. I’m sure this isn’t normal. Am I missing a washer or something? The bearing was seating properly per the manual. Is there a diagram that shows the correct order and quantity of the pieces?

I recently replaced mine.
When I tightened mine down to 135ft/lbs or whatever it was, all of that got pulled tightly together.
The only diagram I've seen is the torque spec guide.. But someone else might know of others.


I had some other issues, though. Have over 120k miles so decided to replace all the u joints. After the job, had a loud hum at 70+ mph. (It was a horrible feeling to have just done that work, and made the truck worse!) Lifted the rear wheels off the ground, put it in drive, and saw the front joint was vibrating badly. Took it apart, and one of the 4 arms had 2 of the flat thrust bearings in it! One of those tiny washer looking things was enough to throw off the balance. Got it back together, and everything seemed ok. But it just bothered me.. Where did that extra washer come from. Either I screwed up when I was replacing the joints and accidentally got two in there.. Or the factory messed up. Probably a good chance it was me, and maybe another joint was missing one. So, dropped the drive shaft a 3rd time. Took the other two joints completely apart and checked them all. Everything was fine.

If no one gets back to you w/ a better diagram, I can take some photos of mine.. Not sure if it would help.

 

I'm thinking there were only two washers. Or I guess you can say one washer then that bigger one that I think your calling a dust shield. But did you make sure you put the center bearing on right? ( Facing the correct way) . Depending on what kind you used , some sit alittle forward or backward. Mine had a notch that went forward. According to the directions.
