Blind testing like swapping boxes you did is good. Getting good data better. That was why I suggested taking pressure drop readings with a magnehelic through out the intake system as per the referenced article.

Also only one change at a time! Do two or more and one can cancel out another.

Maybe the carbon filter won't break down, maybe it will and is. If the pieces of carbon are loose then they are rubbing against each other and creating carbon dust. Which would mean the dust goes through the engine. The more vibrations from off roading to rough roads would increase the breakdown.

The other thing to consider is most manufacturers don't care what happens to their product after their warranty expires.

I agree the butt meter is easy to fool - thats why true data must be gathered. Not fake like - I can prove younger people age faster than older people. Just follow this for a moment. Take a four year old and a two year old. The two year old is half the age of the four year old. When the four year old is eight the two year old is six or three fourths the other age. Therefore the original two year old is aging faster, the numbers can't lie! But they do. It's all in how it's presented.

There is absolutely no gain, why 50/50? Stop telling him to do it.

Controlled study on dirty filters says BS.

    http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/pdfs/Air_Filter_Effects_02_26_2009.pdf

    4.1 CONCLUSIONS
The goal of this study was to explore the effects of a clogged air filter on the fuel economy of vehicles
operating over prescribed test cycles. Three newer vehicles (a 2007 Buick Lucerne, a 2006 Dodge
Charger, and a 2003 Toyota Camry) and an older carbureted vehicle were tested.

Results show that clogging the air filter has no significant effect on the fuel economy of the newer
vehicles (all fuel injected with closed-loop control and one equipped with MDS). The engine control
systems were able to maintain the desired AFR regardless of intake restrictions, and therefore fuel
    consumption was not increased.

Factory cruise added, wood storage box in bed, wood center console/armrest, charcoal air filter delete.
Removing the filter on a 2WD gains nothing, but on a 4WD the gain is doubled!!!

Mine is still one peice (if I ever wanted to put it back in) and I just took the two clips off and removed the secondary filter with a tiny flathead screwdriver. It popped out easy and was done in about three minutes. Just pop them off like door panels.

So if I plan on getting a different CAI in the future then I might as well do this for the time being. Right?

    Fuelage update:

First check after pulling it was 21.7. About normal for me.
Second fill-up; 19.8. Very low for me and I was thinking to myself, "well, that answers that".
    Third fill: 21.44.

Normally, 21.44 would be right where I live but, as I was pumping, I was really expecting low numbers because I had kinda been a bit loose with the throttle so, to have done so and still see a number like that was a bit off to me.

    Looking forward to tank 4.

    For those keeping track:
    2010 double cab V6, 5200 - 6700 foot elevation.

So at the lowest RPM and part throttle, nearly the lowest air demand point of the engine, you think that removing a negligible amount of air restriction is making a notable impact; makes absolutely no sense. Even if you're slamming the pedal to the floor off idle the RPM is likely above that point faster than the throttle plate can get to wide open so any restriction to cylinder filling would be the plate itself. During that transition the shape and volume of the intake has much more effect on the engine than it's flow capacity so even if the screen were very restrictive it would have little effect on power response.

As already stated, absolutely zero reason the carbon filter can make a difference in mpg.

Every difference you see is just variations in weather and driving habit over a tank of gas.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet, but you could also use a drill to bore out the intake holes at the bottom of the intake box for more flow.

I don't get it. Since the air is drawn in from the bottom of the box anyway, how would making the holes slightly bigger (to help it breath easier), cause it to become a warm-air intake?

In stock form the air is being drawn through a tube that extends into the wheel well, any holes in the box will draw air from the engine compartment.

Got it. Cap the well, run induction inlet tube to behind the grill w/screen, do as you like with the charcoal filter, get tuned...
