Correct me if I'm wrong but if you're worried about airflow restriction and it's required to remove the secondary carbon filter when installing a CAI...why not just get a CAI and not worry about it?

People are wrong that are worried about airflow restrictions from the carbon filter. The stock setup is CAI.

That charcoal bag isn't an emissions device, it's an air freshener. It makes no difference whether it is there or not. It doesn't change performance, it doesn't change the sound, it doesn't change mpg and there has been no gas smells because it isn't there. All this mess is about nothing. Nothing happens or changes whether it is there or not. Nobody is going to look in there to see if you have it or not during emissions testing. Nothing to gain with it gone. Nothing to gain with it there. Nothing to lose either way. It's just an unnecessary insignificant conversation and debate item. Nothing more.

Ripped mine out in my 06 a few weeks ago. no noticeable improvement in power.. sound is about the same (I don't rely on the butt dyno).

However.. fuel economy DID go up according to my scan guage II.. I'm returning about 1-2 mpg better than before. I've also noticed.. idle is about 100-200 Rpm's lower..

So it is a decent improvement.. and a damn good one for a 2 minute mod.

Did this mod today... Got so excited to check out the results I put everything back together- except for the mass air flow plug. So I started the engine the first time, real rough, died. Started a second time and it ran but rough. Realized what I had done and fixed the original issue by plugging the mass airflow sensor back up. Only problem now is that I'm throwing a CEL. Anyone care to offer some guidance on how to rid myself of the light?

Scan guage can probably clear it... other than that... try unplugging the battery

Mine actually was pretty bad... so removing it for me did net a small gain.

It does "seem" more responsive to me. I figure that airflow is a good thing for performance, even if the performance net is small. It didn't cost anything. If a S/C forces air then why would un restricting airflow not have the same or similar effect?

Because it isn't restrictive in the first place. Dyno tests found no difference between an intact charcoal filter and OEM air filter and without both filters. the carbon filter doesn't get dirty since it's after the air filter. Might get clogged with oil if you're a fan of oiled filters. Factory filter can outflow the engine.

My charcoal filter was terrible.. I bought my truck certified pre owned... so the previous owner have ran a crappy filter that let stuff past it.. and I guarantee the dealership doesn't check the charcoal filter as one of its inspections..

Once that charcoal filter is dirty.. there's no cleaning it.. I run a K&N drop in now... it's cheaper for me to wash and oil it after a mtn or desert trip than to buy a new one...
