Thanks 05Moose. I picked up the filter at Home Depot. Be sure to get the resizable one, there are others that won't work.

I looked at my filter it had a pile of twigs and leaves on it, the filter was almost black. I don't want all that stuff in my fan. I'm not worried about micron size particles, those can get in other ways like when the windows are open.

A new filter cost $20 at walmart, this cost $20. I'm doing it to save money with saves my world.

    Pretty airtight?

Do you have to wear air tanks while you drive?

    Pretty funny statement.

So I should have added..."in comparison to the Tacoma." There's a reason highlander owners have problems with the mold smell if the AC has been running and you don't turn it off and run fresh air well before home (common in a lot of models). They just don't leak air everywhere like the Taco does around door handles, etc. It actually gets stuffy sometimes with the heat on causing us to open windows. And drive home through smoke due to everyone burning with it on Recirc and compare. A lot more smoke gets in the Taco cabin compared to the HL. You just can't argue real-world facts.

I'm sure you are right, I just couldn't pass it up.

Cool but only place I can find the part number is on the K&N site. Must be too new to be anywhere else any cheaper. I have the homemade electrostatic version but will be swapping to the K&N whenever I can earmark 55.00 for the filter and cleaning kit since the cleaning kit is different from the airfilter cleaning kit - electroststic recharge vs re-oiling. Thanks for posting up the info............

This is awesome idea! I am totally doing this! La Puente Hills Toyota tried charging me about $80 to replace my filter on my 2014 yesterday!

Went ahead and sprung for the K&N filter, cleaning kit & $7 garage banner. I will put my DIY washable electrostatic one up for sale cheap when the K&N arrives.

Keep us posted on how you like it. I'm assuming it will collect finer particles as compared to the one I made. Also let us know if leaves and needles get stuck in it. That was my first thought when I looked at it.

Well, seeing as how I live in a neighborhood built on a prairie and the trees here were brought in by the builder plus parking in a garage every night at home and every day at work, I might not be the best reporter of that type action..........

Make sure to install it where ribs run crossways to vehicle. filter is square so it'll fit either way but it sagged in the middle a bit when i fisrt put it where ribs ran with vehicle. Has nice clean air smell to it too.

I paid for it once. Then did it myself the second time. Took all about 10 min to do. Using a K&N cabin filter and air filter. Last ones you'll ever need to buy.

I usually spray Endust on my furnace filters in the house. I try to change them monthly. A HVAC guy thought that was a good idea. I wonder if that would help?

Boom, slides in tightly like a glove. Not gonna lie, it's finicky. Tip to save you all some time. Cut your rails to 8" on both sides, slide both grids in without the mesh, then clip off whatever is sticking out, then cut the mesh to the same size as the grid. That should save you at least half hour.

I've had my truck for a little over 2 years, I started smelling musty, dusty smells through the vents, low and behold, the paper filter was atrocious. Never had to buy one from the stealership, this puppy will be in there 4 life. Thanks OP.
