    That's too cool, If I didn't get my employee discount on cabin air filters, I would totally spend an afternoon making one. Nice write up, I'm sure with minor modifications I would probably work on other Toyota vehicles as well

    Great idea, but I am curious why you don't just wash your oem filters? I know that they are not actually intended to be washed but they are fiberglass and with a gentle cleaning using soap and warm water will look like brand new. I have been washing the filter by hand for the life of the truck and the dam thing looks brand new. Why even bother with making your own??

    Another member mention just washing the oem filter. But the question is, are the oem filter even meant to be wash and reuse? If you're gonna go that route, I'm pretty sure you're gonna have to eventually replace it. No?

    Like the op stated it's to save $$ from buying filters from the stealership. This mod isn't for everyone.

    Thanks for the write up. I went to Home Depot and purchased the adjustable air filter yesterday and completed the project within an hour. Actually less than that because I made 2 sets in that time frame. I didn't want to throw away the extra material, so I pulled my wife's filter on her scion xa and made a replacement for her car as well. Good deal! $18 filter from Home Depot made me 2 washable/reusable cabin air filters for my tacoma and a scion xa.

    Yep, great write-up & great comments from others who have also done this DIY mod. I bought the filter from Lowes yesterday and it was still $20. Spent maybe 30 minutes this morning to do the cutting & it fit perfectly the first time. Just a slight resistance as it was pushed in. I did cut about 1/8" smaller than the 8"x8" recommended by the OP.

    Our new Toyota cabin filter was totally full of dust after only two off-road excursions earlier this summer. I knocked out a pile of dust, but it was still very brown & dirty looking. I'm looking forward to just rinsing off this new one. Money well spent.

    Cut 8x8, didn't work. Trimmed more, didn't work. I ended up slapping it in the truck without the frame. Works fine this way too

    I am very glad that I stumbled onto this DIY thread. I just checked my records & the last time I changed my filter was at the local "Jiffy Lube" while getting an oil change. The guy said "do you want to change your cabin filter?" I said sure. When I got the bill I almost shit. $ 50.00 freakin bucks for the cabin filter !!!!! Can you believe it ? Never again............

    I did the mod today (thanks again 05Moose). It took me a couple of tries, but my filter was under 8". I kept test fitting the frame and finally got it perfect. I just hope I can get the thing out to clean it!

    Attempted to make this last night... had to revisit the drawing board 2-3 times before i got it to fit.

    i have a 2013 and had to cut it down to a little under 8" for it to fit. also the border on the filter is thick so i know i am going to have a sweet time getting it back out. (problems for a later date)

    I did it by the book and it was a pain getting in and out.

    I ended up not using the frame and just using zip ties to hold it together. Doesn't look as good but functions, IMO, better.

    I used to use a washable filter for my home a/c but then read that they weren't a great idea. I'll pass and buy the throw away models
