Came across a Youtube vid for replacing the sponge filter in the secondary air pump with a uni filter to prevent a worn sponge from deteriorating in the pump. Started searching and could find no info if 3rd gen 2.7 need this mod; every video/forum post was for 2nd gen. The air pump looks the same for both generations.

Does anyone know if the problem was corrected in 3rd gen?

Nope it's the same exact setup with 3rd gen 2TR-FE. I did the uni filter mod on my 3rd gen 2.7L for cheap insurance..been years, no issues
