I’m sure they can but what I was trying to say is that you don’t talk to the gps constellation, you just receive the information they broadcast. I honestly have no idea if our trucks have a transponder that actually broadcasts data like onstar or if they just use our phones via the entune app

Still better than Volvo, and their vehicles that will only go up to a certain speed.

Auto manufactures have forgotten that the concept of freedom, is what has been selling their vehicles for the past century.

If I was Toyota I’d be recording data too if everyone decided to sue me claiming their car just accelerated out of control and the brakes mysteriously wouldn’t work at the same time...

Don’t tell the overland preppers. They’ll be all ready to bug out stuck in their driveways.

OP, it’s just wires, get the EWD for your truck and you can disable it in case you wanna use your truck for some illicit activities

What I wonder is if I have a built in dash cam with my 2018 lane assist/crash avoidance camera? Is the video of the lane assist camera on a recording loop?

This is not accurate. They can and do transmit data through the entune headunit to cell phone connection. Now how much / or what, I have no idea, but it is possible if you have the entune app on your smart phone, and they do transmit (as I’ve monitored it), I just never looked at what, it could be simply getting data for the entune apps, or it could be transmitting anything they like.

I’m somewhat in a side industry to the automotive data collection, and from what the manufactures are admitting to, Toyota is leading the amount of data collected. But this could simply be a because they have more cars out their. They could be collecting a huge amount of generic boring data from millions of cars rather than a small manufacturer who is collecting a lot of what we would consider truly private data from their cars. Tesla comes to mind on the latter.

Toyota is planning data centers to store petabytes of data about their vehicles, around 10-15 years worth per vechicle. (Fact, I worked for a data storage fabric company that was trying to do R&D for the project.)

The third gen definitely communicates wirelessly and is ratting you out. (Speculation, but the only realistic way you can read the line in the owner's manual)

My point was there is no transmittal device in the vehicle except your phone. You have full control of your phone. The data that is transmitting through your phone when connected to entune is app data that you have decided to use.
