Not without your cell phone. It has no device.

Wrong! The truck can "transmit data without notification to you". Read the owner's manual.

Yes, through the OBD connection. It transmits all that data when it gets hooked up in the shop, and it does it without your permission. "Transmit data" can be via a wired connection you know.
I have read the owner's manual... many times.

So you're suggesting that these dealer techs, every time a truck comes in, hook up some data reader to the ODB port, which can then send the data to Toyota's data center? (This actually sounds somewhat reasonable...)

What about the self service guys? This doesn't match up with what I know, which is that they want to capture data for the lifetime of the vehicle.

For the Tacoma, that’s accurate, but it’s not for other Toyota models, and that’s what he was talking about. What gets me is Toyota, Ford, GM and the like are doing it through the built in WiFi connections that you are paying the service charge for, and are not open about it. At least manufacturers like Jag are being honest and their cars have 2 WiFi/cell connections, one you pay the service charge for and doesn’t transmit a thing, and one they pay the service charge for and does transmit everything.

Not every time, as I have watched my oil changes and there were no connection, but, when your vehicle throws a code or they are troubleshooting, then yes, data gets "transmitted' from your truck to the dealer and if needed, Toyota.

Yes and I will steer clear of these vehicles until it becomes public exactly what "Onstar" for example is doing. Unless I can completely opt out (Tacoma and Tundra) then I will keep what I have. Now, I might not mind if they would only tell you what data they collect but until then nope.

I just turned 40 and have had the internet in my home since my last teens, basically as long as it has been available. I have long since given up on the paranoia aspect of the internet, life is too short and gives you enough to worry about. I don't see the need to add to the b.s.. My work pro-actively uses black box data to assess discipline and maintain rules compliance and I understand the need. Quite frankly I'm just not that interesting and am already on the govt radar(NFA stuff, HAM radio, federal license at work). Our digital fingerprint is used everywhere but mostly to sell us stuff. I can't imagine that Toyota occasionally doesn't pull a vehicle health report using my phones data plan. But I bet that's about it. You never know, that data may exonerate you in a no witness, he said/she said crash.
