My title says base model and I do not see the PreRunner branding. I have 6 lug rims though. Aren't 6 lugs for PreRunner and 4x4? I'm curious if the previous owner did a conversion.

What exactly is a PreRunner? From what I've been reading is that it is simply a 4x4 without the 4x4 whereas the base has a different suspension.

My smart phone is.... well... dead  so no pictures until I get my digitizer.

It's not an SR5 (at least there is no branding), nor is it a prerunner. Was 6 lug an option? It's a quad cab, long bed, grey cloth interior, and has the storage boxes as opposed to the 110V outlet.

My neighbor my stepdad and myself all have base model 6 lug 4x4's. Not sr5 nothing fancy. There all 4 cylinder 5 speed plain jane tacomas so they are out there. I think there usually used for fleet vehicles though because most people want all the bells and whistles.

So the differentiating factor in suspension is either 5 lug or 6 lug? Because I have a 6 lug I have the same suspension as any other 6 lug (prerunner or 4x4)?

Not prerunner/4x4 = one suspension, base = another suspension

Makes sense. What confused me was when I went to order some front wheel bearings. I went to Advance and ordered 2006 -> Toyota -> Tacoma -> 2WD bearings and they were very small (it wasn't the assembly with the 4 bolt holes, just the bearing). However when I changed it to 2006 -> Toyota -> Tacoma PreRunner I got the bearing assembly with the 4 bolt holes. The part number was the same as 2006 -> Toyota -> Tacoma -> 4WD. I was confused and went to the dealer and they said my bearing has the same part number as the 4WD which makes sense now.

So basically the original owner got a base model (dealership terms) and added the 6 lug suspension option without upgrading the trim level to PreRunner or SR5.

So what should I refer to my Tacoma on here as lol??

When I say upgrade I meant he added 6-lug option. I'm assuming that the owner ordered a base model at the dealer with an optional 6-lug suspension. It may have been cheaper than upgrading the trim level to a PreRunner hence why he did it that way?

It's probably just missing the PreRunner badge. 6 lug and 2wd = PreRunner, always.

And to add, in PreRunner config, there are base models(black bumpers/wheel flares), SR5, TRD Offroad/Sport, and Limited in certain years.

It's not new, it's not Mexico
Back in '06 the Double Cab only came in Prerunner or 4X4 models. Both came with 16 inch, 6 lug wheels, 12.56" front disc brakes & "overfenders" The Double Cabs could be had in a base model with black front & rear bumpers, black overfenders, no SR-5 goodies like cruse control, variable speed wipers, SR-5 seat fabric & leather wrapped steering wheel. If it has 6 lug-16 inch wheels with 12.56" front brakes and is 2 wheel drive, it's a Prerunner. There was no 6 lug option for 4X2s. Hope this helps.
Edit: I wish all the 4X2 models came with the 16 inch wheels.

Sorry to kick start this thread but thought its relevant. My son has a base model 2014 Tacoma with 5 lug wheels. Yes, he should have bought a prerunner but what are the options for converting to 6 lug? Aside from swapping suspension from a 6 lug model are there no other options for 5 lug owners? Admittedly he would also like the lift (again he should have bought a prerunner) but has anyone done such a conversion? There are lots of wrecked Tacos in DFW area

You would need a new axle, new hubs all around, new wheels, new suspension, new drive shaft, who knows what else. Bottom line, not worth the hassle, it would be cheaper to trade for a prerunner/4x4

Mod with 5 lug parts. If he really wants a 6 lug, he'll have to buy one. As I understand it, there are way too many differences for a conversion.

Damn...sorry I asked. I was going to give him my 6lugs off my truck if there was an economical way to convert. Thanks Hoarder for the short and drama-free response.

You seem to be missing one step in the "trim" options...

    Goes like this;
    BASE, SR5, TRD

So the answer is YES, all major configurations are available in a "base" option, as well as in "SR5". However, you need a V6 and 6-lug in order to have the "TRD" option available.

That might be valid, if said 5-lug happens to be a "base" 5-lug and not an "SR5" 5-lug, which is definitely an option.

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
    http://adaptitusa.com/5-lugto6-lugadapters.aspx could be a possibility.

I have a 5 lug and love it for many reasons. I'm trying to study up on 5 lugs from other marquees that might be a straight bolt on, and give a look I'd like, while allowing a bit more tire to be in place.

Like the wheels from a Crown Vic or Grand Marquis. 16x7 and on every police and taxi for the last humpteen years. And cheap.

I've seen pics here of RAV 4, Highlander and even 300ZX wheels on 5 luggers, all of which looked quite nice for how the specific trucks were being built.
