I've seen other brands white peeling but who knows if it's factory or a repaint.

Perhaps a long shot... But I'm wondering if it's possible there is something about the white paints that makes them susceptible to a certain ingredient maybe in a particular wax, polish, sealant, or soap/detergent being used?

Just curious why so much variability on this issue.
Like for example, I remember decades ago Armor-All Original protectant was causing some vinyl & rubber products (seats, dash, tires, etc.) to harden and crack sooner than if it was never used at all.

Maybe everyone can tell us what brand/type products you have used on the paint (if any) and how often, and whether you have the peeling or not. Wondering if a pattern might emerge...

    Yes please!
I’m one of those just rinse it off and call it good peeps. No soaps or fancy waxes and mine has been pealing since about 2019. On the other hand my friend has the same year and peeling but is pretty anal about keeping it clean and waxed. :notsure:

OP- the white paint recall has been released, many VINs are covered. My 2018 TRDOR started peeling on fenders and doors(minimal), my local dealership covered all work bc Toyota had’nt initiated the recall yet. $6 k of work(dealer paid), truck looks new now.

The original issue with the super white 040 paint is the application……MX plant machine calibration was not accurate, and was applying only 2-4mil thick paint, instead of factory required 8-10mil thick. The dealership had a “paint thickness gauge” to discern areas that need repair, they even sent a tech out from Corporate to document the process/issues. They have found multiple ‘New Stock” trucks with failing paint issues, and are addressing it as they recieve complaints/notification.
They were forced to add the Tacoma to the notorious Toyota white paint recall, something they have been avoiding since 2009(every other model is covered)

My 2007 has had major paint peeling. And from my informal observations I see a LOT of other white vehicles with peeling paint. More so than any other color, and not just Toyota. Remember, Toyota, nor any other car manufacturer produces their own paint, oil, tires, batteries, belts, hoses, light bulbs, or many other parts. They all buy them from the same manufacturers.

It may well be limited to certain model years. But Ford and Chevy are buying their white paint from the same manufacturers as Toyota.

I have a 2006 and the paint still looks great. I am meticulous, though about touching up all the little chips and dings from rocks and whatever else hits it.

From what I understand ive only seen mainly 2018 peeling. I have a 2021 currently and it does not peel. When I bought my cap off a 2019 their white did not peel either. Depends on the truck but I think 2018s are more likely.

    minor tweaks
I had white work trucks for years, none were ever waxed and they were rarely washed. Despite that none had peeling paint.

The problem isn't the paint color it's the paint job.

Nothing but drive through 3-4 times a year. Honestly I think metallic paints seem way more susceptible to premature peel/fade/etc. I see that a lot even here in mild northern Ca. I think clay gets way more use than is advisable, it makes the paint look great but it’s a fine abrasive rather than a coating. Even if I were so inclined I would limit it to every couple years at most, possibly even 3-5.

I live in the sunny and hot deep south; I'll take my chances with a white paint job.

    LS1 swap with nitros.
2016 bought new. 101k on it. Hand washed, waxed with Gtechniq CSL light every 2 years. Garaged but plenty of time in parking lot at work. Metal still identifies as white (aka zero peeling).
