if you don't mind the black bumpers/ fender flares, skip the sr5 package and just get the base. in my opinion, the base bucket seats are more comfortable than the sr5 with good lumbar support.

I picked up a V6 SR5 4x4 a couple of months ago. The only thing I really wish the truck had was alloy rims but I will upgrade as soon as I find the right deal. My truck will not see any gnarly trails. The worst it will encounter is some beat up dirt roads and Northeast winter conditions.

Like some others that have replied, I find the SR5 seats to be very comfortable.

I think the real functional difference between the SR5 and the TRD-offroad package comes when you are in 4-LOW. When you are in 2WD or H4, both systems are the same. Once you go into L4 the SR5 has no traction control features at all, just two open diffs while the TRD-offroad has the option to enable active traction control called A-TRAC (and/or the rear locker which I don't think is as useful).

So if you care about having traction control in L4 then you should care about TRD-offroad. All the other shit is cosmetic. But you cannot add A-TRAC to an SR5 as an aftermarket option. At least, I don't think it would be easy because it has extra hydraulic pumps and ties into the ABS system.

Theres also the so called yellow wire mod which allows SR5 trucks to use regular ass TRAC in L4 and that's also an option thats free and better than open diffs. The main difference between TRAC and A-TRAC is that A-TRAC uses a dedicated extra hydraulic pump to manage wheel spin and is much more sensitive in detecting wheel spin. A-TRAC will kick on as soon as there is a very small difference in wheel speed. With TRAC you have to rev your engine to generate e a large difference in wheel speed before the system will kick on and start working.

    Too few to list.
Good info and all true but it all depends on what he's gonna use the truck for. If you ever find yourself in 4L with the yellow wire mod and still needing traction, then you're in really deep $hit to begin with and ARB air lockers will probably be your next mod.

Base model seats are different than SR5? Or just for regular cab? I thought there were only two types, TRD ones and non TRD ones.

I believe the SR5 seat is a base bucket seat with upgraded seat fabric.

i agree 100% i have owned all the Tacomas in a TRD package mainly because of the seats. I alos love the electric supply in the bed and i use it quiet often. Ill be honest with you a TRD package is worth the price.

i would base your choice all on the price and what is avail in the dealer inventory. my truck with the options that came with it, was only a few hundred dollars less then the TRDs. But no TRD were in stock with the cab and tranny combo i wanted. i waited almost 3 months for a truck to come in and it was my SR5.

So basically for a few hundred dollars more, i could of had a TRD OR if one was avail.

My 2010 was an SR5, I basically picked it because I liked the color, Pyrite Mica. It also had the steel wheels, that I grew to like.

Don't get me wrong, I love my new Silver 2012 TRD Sport...but it's so nice, I feel a little out of my element driving it. It's why I don't have a Corvette anymore, I felt like a pretencious ass in it.

I prefer a more humble appearance as I grow older.

It really comes down to your personal preference. I really like my SR5. I wouldn’t change to TRD.

The LSD works in two or four wheel drive. I don’t have to lock it in. If I was a real 4X4 off roader, I would just get air lockers anyways.

The hood scoop just reduces your visibility. The TRD seats are too small for me.

There is 3 different bucket seat versions; BASE, SR5, TRD. The base seat has good side lumbar bolstering while the SR5 is more flat and wide with better fabric. The TRD version has more bolstering and the sports fabric.

    Yeah, that damn hood scoop...

By your reasoning, those windshield washer supply fittings make visibility near impossible from the drivers seat of the Tacoma.

And the TRD seats are not smaller than the SR5 seats, the TRD seats just have more bolstering.

For the price difference (SR5 vs TRD OR) you can get two ARB' lockers compressor and installation. Makes no financial sense to go to TRD OR if you need traction. If you buying truck for show then yea TRD sticker looks pretty but on the end that's all you getting.

SR5 = Tuner ready. Start with the basics, modify the truck to your liking.
Sport and Off Road = Factory modified. Toyota upgraded the truck to their liking and marketability. Not everyone likes it.

    What do you want?

In my opinion, OP, you want a 4x4 Access Cab SR5. Save some cash. Upgrade as you feel necessary. Find a wrecked Sport or Off Road and buy the seats.

Did they really reduce the size of the hood scoop (2012’s) or just modify the front of it?

Yes, the scoop did reduce my vision from seeing object in front of the bumper ie. Potholes/Assholes…

And the seats are too small for me with the bolstering’s.

    And personal preference!!!
