How did northerners ever survive through to the 90's without 4WD? /S

As the saying goes, 4WD just gets you stuck further into the ditch... ;)

I like to drive a 4wd because it makes me look taller and it gives me that urban cowboy vibe, both of which lead to more dates. But I've never driven in the snow or ice, never off road, never actually needed 4wd.

    Yup...
When I made a thread about sport or sr5, the sky was falling cuz I wasn't getting a 4wd, & the re-sale value, dont get me started....

To the op, you're not the first, there's many,
I bought my first in April & second just last month, totally content with a 2wd pavement princess.......

As far as the look goes, didn't Toyota get away from RWD trucks that are different (lower) after the 2nd gen?

Coming from Canada...."2WD TRD OR" just sounds like some sort of oxymoron. Unless the "O" stands for "on."

2nd gen Tacoma was still offered in the 2wd prerunner model which had the 4wd suspension, and if you opted for the TRD Off Road, it came with a rear locker. They did away with the prerunner for the 3rd gen.

Resale means diddly shit to me since I don't ever see myself selling the truck at a point where that would play in

Technically the 2.5 was about the same height as my 2G, but I am not sure re 3G

Or maybe those people will sell in short order..if so, then I get why it would be a thing for them. Not a thing for everyone though..

Yeah, buying & selling every few years & having a car payment the majority of your adult life isn't how I roll, dont need to have the latest & greatest every few years...
But that's a financial planning discussion for another time, some can't be helped...

Same here, never had a payment until I was 33 years old.

Im in North Carolina and can count on one hand the number of times Ive needed 4x4 over 12 years of owning my 2011 Tacoma. When I got my 24 I decided to just get a 2wd Tacoma.

I went RWD also. Weather here doesn't require 4WD and since mine has RLD, that should be enough for any off-road situation I'd be in (nothing extreme at all). Years ago I had a 4WD and don't recall ever using it. Also really wanted just a 2-dr, so the one that was a good fit for my purposes didn't have 4WD as an option anyway---- was easy decision.

When I was in the market for a used 4Runner like ten years ago I used to get so stoked when I’d find a killer deal on one. Then I would see 2WD in the description and think, why would anyone buy this? I guess if I didn’t live where there was snow or trailheads it might make sense.

4WD is used often enough for a number of things that justify hauling around the extra 300 or so lbs. Boat ramps (been stuck on those with 2wd and the tide coming in), steep hills in some areas (I could smell my clutch when trying to get out of my driveway in 2wd because 1st gear in the manual 2.7 was so tall), and snow. I enjoy driving in snow, and it is impossible to get around some of the mountainous BC towns without it. We used to sit in my MIL's kitchen watching cars *just* about make it to the top of her street in Nelson BC (think San Fran hills, but covered in snow) only to slowly slide back down the hill. I absolutely hate that feeling and will do anything to avoid it. If none of the above apply to your situation, 2wd is fine. I just got tired of white knuckling it.

I can remember laughing at a friend with tacoma pickup years ago that was lifted 2wd but was basically a pre runner

now almost 40 years later and having owned 2 2wd tacoma trucks during that period I understand

and not once have I needed 4 wd or been stuck but I have wished for a more ground clearance

My first year with true winter tires (Nokians, as opposed to MTs with the 3PMS symbol) and they really are better. Got them in Nelson from a guy who now only uses his Taco in the summer.
Could not imagine trying to navigate a pickup in the BC mountains without 4WD, but if you stayed in the valleys, and had studs....maybe RWD would suffice.

I do not agree, unless you never plan to leave your home and live in a metro area. I have used my 4x4 many times...we have PLENTY of wilderness in the Sunshine State. Plenty of hills and trails and fun! Don't tell anyone though.
