So I recently decided to get a spare key for my 2010 Tacoma Base 2.7L 4X4 and wasn't sure if my key had a chip in it or not. There is no dot or G on it but instead an L. What's the L suppose to mean?
I'm almost certain that I can use a plain key. My valet key has no chip in it( no head/rubber to it either) and it started the truck just fine. I really don't want to go to the dealership to have this done.
What's the best way to go?

That looks like the non transponder key. My 08 had that key, my 14 has the transponder and the plastic head is thicker. My key has a G on it, I can't remember if my 08 had the L.

No chip, same as mine...if you wanna be sure take it to a hardware store that does chip keys, they can test it.

2.7L 4cyl never has a chip. All the 4.0L V6 do have a chip. So you are good to go with no chip.

Thanks a whole lot for the information. I'll be buying a key this weekend.
This question might be pretty obvious, but would a blank key that has a non active chip in it still work as a spare key? Or do you have to get the plain regular key?
    Thanks again.

Yes, that will work as well for a non-chiped ignition such as yours.

Maybe true for trucks sold in the USA, but all Canadian 2nd Gens have the passive immobilizer with the transponder key, including 4cyl trucks.

I paid that for 2 keys when I bought my truck at the dealer in SD County. Took it in at 5000 mile to my OC dealer and they programmed them into the system for free.
