Looking at buying a single axle travel trailer, dry weight 3400, hitch weight 399, gross weight 4600. Do I need a brake controller, do I need a weight distributing hitch? I live in the Rockies, so big hills will be seen a lot. I'm pretty sure I want both, but do I NEED either?

I'm a big fan of a weight distributing hitch
Especially with the hills and curves of the Rockies
Also a brake controller is def a plus
    So yea I'd recommend both

I would definitely do the trailer brake controller. Air bags and WD hitch would also really help. You will have more vehicle stability and better control.

    I tow a 4000 lb trailer.
I say yes on both. Brake controller and WD Hitch.
Your Trailer weighs more than your truck.

I've towed with similar vehicles of similar GVWR (just not the tacoma).

Brake controller - YES!!! Make sure it has a safety that when/if the trailer is disconnected, the brakes automatically come on. I'd think most controllers have that, but.....just an FYI.

I never used a WD hitch - I've towed with a Grand Cherokee (same tow rating, approx same GVWR as tacoma) -6500lb load. I SHOULD have had one. It was often a white knuckle ride going down long hills on the highway. If I'd ever had to do that again, I'd definitely have a WD hitch.

Instead, we changed over to a Dodge Ram. Much bigger tow rating (10,000lbs) and much overall heavier vehicle). No need for a WD hitch with the Dodge ram (same 6500lb load).

So, with the tacoma....I'd say... get a WD hitch. It'll make things safer, better handling, and easier towing experience (when its setup properly).

Yes. Most definitely. Brake controller. Weight distribution hitch if you don't have airbags.
