Do I need to be in 4 wheel to use rear locker?

    Manual says to try in 4 wheel drive first, but doesn't say whether or not I HAVE to use it on 4 wheel drive only

    It will only engage in 4 low unless you do the locker anytime mod. There are two versions, one with a switch and one without.

    Yep, 4-lo. It should be switchable in any mode directly from the factory.
