Well this is the second gen forum but since you posted a lone tapered roller bearing and you have a 95 I'll assume these go on a spindle.

Yes, I'd pack em well. Toyota says to on the 93 2wd model but I don't have the info for the 4wd only a diagram. I'd assume they say the same thing. I'd do it regardless. Looks like shipping grease to me.

Edit: the 96 procedure I have from Toyota for 4wd says to coat hub and cap as well as pack bearings before installation.

oh and disassemble? appears to be a tapered roller bearing, what's to disassemble?

I had a thread started on this already and dirtymike sent me a link to this thread. So naturally there were some good info here and I'd thought it would be a good idea to post my problem. and Looks like it payed off well.

so after reading your post, you would suggest for me to take apart the setup I have and pack it with better grease then put it back together. I assume I'd have to go some where to unpress this then press it back?
    thanks

I guess I'm not sure what I'm looking at.

If these bearings sit on a spindle theres no pressing of any kind going on and there not assembled into anything. If there in a unit bearing like the 2nd gen ones pictured in XXXX's post, then you just pop the bearings out of the assembly and pack them. If they have a hub pressed into them like in the other thread just run them.

Are they a unit bearing? Post another picture. They look like tapered roller bearings that sit in a hub on a spindle.

Okay, unit bearing style for 1st gen. That'll press onto a hub and then that whole thing presses into the knuckle. Huge PITA I hear. Sounds like you need at least a 50 ton press too.

I'd expect you should be able to remove the bearings though. I would try with a plastic drift or brass if you have it. Use a cheap tooth brush, or anything that won't mar or splinter. Just butt it up through the inside of one to the race of the other and give it some taps with a hammer, pretty light though. I can't say for sure though as I've never seen one in person.

Sure. I've read posts by some who claim these are ball bearings but to me they look like tapered rollers, I swear I see the rollers. Maybe they're not tapered? So that tubular outer should be a housing and the inside makes up an outer "cup" or race, that the inside race, cage, and rollers seat into. Then you have the same on the other half of it. I can't think (or see) of any reason why they shouldn't come out but like I said I can't say for sure that they do. I wouldn't try too hard without knowing a little more.

I'm assuming they're pretty much this.

Let us know what you find out. I can't find a lot of info out there on these 1st gen bearings. Also you may be able to pack at least that one side from the top there. Just put some grease in your palm and kneed the back into it, pushing it through. Super messy though so have plenty of rags at hand. The tub of grease is best for this too btw.

ya they look like those. so what I have must be tapered. I guess it takes a little muscle to get them out.
