I always, always jump on my son's shit about 'No.. NO! When you're backing up, you look over yer shoulder and actually LOOK BEHIND YOU!' He relies on his 'backup camera'.. (He hates driving with me ..)

I think beside the FMVSS requirements, the TPMS came about from the Auto industry trying to meet CAFE regulations by eliminating the spare tire and the associated weight.

IIFC, many models are sold without a spare tire.

.I prefer to keep everything operational on my vehicle, I don’t need the tpms, but since I paid over 30k for the vehicle it’s a doable expense for me. I figure I will replace them once in 15 yrs of ownership and it will help me fetch a better price on a resale when the time comes if everything works.

In the 50s, planes flew just fine with only a compass, altimeter, air speed meter and a radio. Based on the logic in this thread, there’s no need for all the nannies in modern aircraft. They probably even have a light on the dash that comes on if someone doesn’t flush. BTW, I wonder if airplanes have TPMS. I’ve never once seen a pilot check the tire pressure during his preflight inspection.

That is what I remember. Ford Explorer, Firestone tire issue, and drivers not monitoring their tire pressure. It started out as an Explorer issue, as it grew in size and weight, the tires were never upgraded to compensate. But, in reality, it affected any vehicle that carried a heavy load or towed. I still see plenty of vehicles with underinflated tires.

How do you manage that at 70 mph

In 2011 I was driving 70-75 on an intestate highway when my warning light came on. I was able to get to the shoulder and stopped in under a minute. By the time I was stopped the right rear was completely flat from a 1/2" hole in the tread. With TPMS I had a few seconds warning to get stopped. Without TPMS I'd have had a tire come apart at 75 mph.[/QUOTE]

The same way I've been dealing with tire inflation and flat tires since l started driving in 1979. I check my tires and go along my marry way. If a tire blows out, that doesn't mean that you are going to loose control and roll your vehicle. You put on your hazards, grab the wheel and only feather the brakes if you have too. Has always worked for me. People have survived without TPMS. Just like they survived without Lane departure warning, and side mirror sensors, and a host of other things. These things may be good. But you don't need them. Hence, people don't replace the TPMS sensors when the batteries die.

A 1/2 inch hole in your tire, means that it deflated in a fraction of a second and you were then driving on the rim. A TPMS sensor wouldn't have made any difference in this situation. As the tire went flat extremely quickly. Prior to you getting over to the shoulder.

Yes sir. I remember that too. The issue was related to the Explorer having a high center of gravity and when one of the rear tires would let go the truck would have a tendency to flip. Actually Ford ended a relationship they had with Firestone since the Henry Ford days.

Best I remember the Ford Explorer had no problems with any other tire except those Firestones. Those Firestone tires never had any problems on anything other than the Ford Explorer. I never knew if the Firestone tires were the problem or if there was a problem with how the Explorer was designed. Firestone having no problems with any other vehicles would indicate a problem with the vehicle. The Ford Explorer not having trouble with any other tire except the Firestone would indicate a problem with the tire. I never knew they figured it out.

Can anyone comment with a link to disable TPMS from coming on? I see lots of talk of it being possible but no links to the mod...

This where I found the how to get rid of TPMS for my Tundra. It should be the same for your Tacoma.

Just build a small sealed PVC pipe cylinder with a valve in an end cap. Put the idiot light triggers in the cylinder and pressurize it to 35. Keep somewhere in the truck.

Or just put them all in the spare tire. You will definitely know if you need to check spare tire air pressure.

But I'm with the OP. Be done with the fuckers once and for all doing the bypass mod. I forget I even had them to begin with.
