You wouldn't have asked us if you didn't want us to talk you into it. Just go for it. Save up the money and do it right the first time. If your going to off road your truck get the lift and be done. No, you don't need a 6" lift. 3" will get you many places you want to go, and some you may wish you never went. :)

What amazes me most is that people buy brand new trucks and then wheel them hard! If you're going to run trails difficult enough to get trail rash, you can't expect to come out damage-free even with a lift. And if you do expect to run hard trails and rash up the truck, why buy a brand new one? It's basically been the same truck since '05, and a Taco with 50K miles is just getting broke in. Might as well save some serious $$ if you're planning to dent it up right away.

That was kinda my thinking when I bought mine, but when an 04 reg cab 4x4 was asking $16k with 90k miles on it, I figured I might as well buy new.

And one reason to do a 3" lift and larger tires is to increase the difficulty of trail you can go on without risking fender and rocker panel dents.

I kind of enjoy getting the "you're fucking nuts" looks on the trail.

Plus, I want to turn this thing into a piece of shit myself. Letting someone else do it just doesn't feel authentic.

A couple of inches of lift on a Tacoma is a beneficial thing if it's done right. A properly set up suspension with have the right balance of compression and rebound travel. From the factory they have too little compression travel, and too much rebound. This will adversely effect the suspensions ability to articulate properly over uneven terrain. I run 65%/35% compression / rebound, but the ideal numbers depend on the trails you run and driving style.

Once you go over about 2" though, you start giving up benefits to gain clearance. Sometimes you have to, but do it grudgingly. Additional lift is detrimental to just about every aspect of handling and performance on and off road. You should not have 1 inch more than you absolutely need to clear the trails you intend to run.

With regard to tire clearance, it is a misnomer that lifting an IFS gains clearance. it only gains clearance when the suspension is not compressed. When a lifted IfS is compressed it goes to the exact same place as a non-lifted IFS. For offroad use, any tire that rubs on a stock suspension will rub on a lifted one when the tire is stuffed.

I WANT one, but I don't think I NEED it.

If you are worried about damage, get armor. You can help out fellow TW members too. I have Relentless sliders and a MetalMiller skid plate. I intend on getting more skids to protect the underside of my truck. I don't do a lot of "wheeling" per se, but I do like to get off the paved road. I took a little "trail" to avoid a train once and bottomed out hard on what didn't look very deep. I thought I needed a lift after that, but realized that I probably would have bottomed out regardless. Better to be prepared. Plus, with a lift, you are going to find yourself trying to test it out; which once again, you will want armor to protect after to hit that limit.

None yet, need to finish the HEEP first
Protect your truck with GOOD sliders and front and rear bumpers. Then figure out if you need a lift.

Yes i havent got a lift yet but my first time out i did 600$ damage to truck. A 3" lift would have prevented the damage -.-

Sliders would have stopped the damage reguardless but i would have slammed the slider..... i hit my rocker from not enough clearance. So yes sliders would have in the ed prevented it but i still would have had to be winched out, had i had the extra 3" of lift plus 2" of tire i wouldnt have hit my rocker and i wouldnt haver needed a winch out.

No...unless your bottoming out a lift is not needed any most times makes a vehicle handle worse offroad. Any lift will limit your down travel.

With a lift you will be trying to take harder more difficult lines because you know your truck is "built". Advice is to still protect your investment with welded on sliders that will not bend up into your cab when you hit/use them. Then LEARN your trucks current limitations/capabilities by choosing better lines.

I could be crazy but has LT been discussed in this thread at all? Maybe I missed something but I'm pretty sure budget mid travel lifts are the topic
