Bait and switch advertising refers to when a seller creates an attractive, but disingenuous offer to sell a particular service or product that they do not actually intend to ever sell. This initial step (i.e., the advertisement) satisfies the “bait” portion of this tactic. The customer is deemed to have “taken the bait” if the advertisement successfully persuades them to enter the store.

Once inside the store, the seller will then pressure the customer into purchasing a more expensive service or product. This step satisfies the “switch.” In most instances, the “switched” service or product is typically not the same as the one being advertised and usually results in some sort of benefit for the seller (e.g., increased profits).

I agree if you can work the dealerships do it... My Story
Dealerships pay Toyota usually $2000.00 dollars under MSRP. I searched for quite a while for the right dealership in So Cal. There are a lot of Toyota dealerships so it did make it easier. Research and find out what the vehicle costs the dealer.... These dealerships were e-mailing me for my business offering just hundreds over their cost.
I bought my 2015 TRD OR in February 2015 at the end of the month. MSRP was 34,412.00. I paid 32,212. Not every dealer will budge mind you. It took 4 or 5 months for me. I walked out of a few dealerships that had the truck I wanted....
I e-mailed fleet managers went to dealerships ect. I asked to see there invoices, which they can do. Some said no and I walked. Being in no hurry helps.
I found a great dealership that wanted to sell me the truck, they showed me their invoice I offered $200.00 over and they said yes. They wanted to sell the truck to make numbers. It was at the end of the month also.
They had quite a few Tacoma's.
You can get under MSRP if you can tough it out..

Every legal department at dealerships spends some time and money to make sure they aren't in hot water over pricing issues. When I was a director of sales, the amount of people calling in wanting the 1 year old Raptor that didn't get the price added so it went out with only dealer handling ($499) included for the price was too damn high! Yes sir absolutely we are legally required to sell you this $60,000 truck for $500. Yes bring your lawyers and the police, I'm sure they will force us to sell it.

The corvette has been competing to buy cars for decades, that 12-18 month delivery timeframe gets em.

I remember when Toyota tried to charge my ex-gf $8k over for a Prius. They were going to give her leather seat covers to soften the blow. She was super down to do it, until I broke down the math for when she would trade it in 2 years later, she walked,

What is the typical price that dealers pay for their vehicles? Is it actually $2000 less than MSRP?

Yep. In this case it would be “oh my mistake that was a typo, here take a look at this model over here that happens to be more expensive”

Dealer here tried that shit with me, told him do that again and I’ll just wait longer for the Ranger to come in that I already have a deposit on.

I left the business in 2015 before shit got crazy expensive. I only worked at a Ford/Lincoln store. The margin on a $70,000 loaded F-450 (crazy how much they went up now) was about $4,800 plus another $2,800 in holdback. If I sold one for MSRP I was set to make about $8,000 before dealer pack (stairstep). Now on the other side of the boat, a base model Fiesta had $75 markup in it for a $15,995 ride. Holdback was another $400 so if you sold it for MSRP you lost $125 since pack is $600.
Typically 3-5% is markup on a new Ford. They have changed how things work, electric cars in Ford the invoice is the same as MSRP which is bananas to me.

When I bought my truck I knew exactly what I wanted. A pyrite mica off-road. I contacted a few dealers telling them want I wanted and to let me know if they had one or were getting one soon. One dealer said they had one. I drove about an hour after work to go see and buy it. I get there and all they had was a gray one that they said was close enough. I flipped out and they ended up filling my gas tank for me.

I remember when the Internet was first getting started and there was some type of car buying website that either accidentally or out of spite published what the actual dealer costs for vehicles were, and at the time I think the 3rd generation 4Runner I wanted to buy that they were listing at MSRP for $28,000 the cost to the dealership was under $22,000.

Given how low corporate family discounts are, MSRP is still a huge profit margin so for them and to now gouge above MSRP is ridiculous.

Dealers like to operate under the assumption that the cost of the vehicle to them is a mystery, how they calculate the actual value of your trade is a mystery, and even commonly known things, such as APR and how it’s calculated, are also a great mystery.

There is not 21%+ markup on a new car, at least there isn't now.

That’s ok. Sometimes argue just to see how frustrated I can get people. No intention on winning. :D

The one tried to get me into a DCSB, said dude those are idiotic. ACLB or I buy nothing from you. Didn’t care too much on color, just no Barcelona Red, don’t particularly care for it.

We have 3 dealers within a half hour, plus I was fine buying a Ford too, so all I had to say that there isn’t much of anything to keep from going somewhere else. Plus have family in AZ, could fly and buy one down there then drive back. Always up for a good road trip.

This is not the “invoice” cost, which we all know is a fake number anyway.

When dealerships started to advertise that they were willing to sell your cars at or BELOW invoice, everybody knew that number was total bullshit.

Which is why I mentioned holdback which is actually printed on Ford's invoices.... The only thing not printed on a invoice from FMC is a monthly stairstep bonus which will vary based on how many cars are sold that month. It is also not a guaranteed figure like holdback. You must be one of those "show me the real invoice" customers? Hint, dealers don't have time to create fake invoices.
