Doing the prerunner to 4wd 5sp. And wanted to double check on driveshaft lengths. My truck is a 99 with a 99 tranny. I've got front and rear driveshafts off of a 97 regular cab. My truck is an 99 extended cab, will these be the right length?

the front should be ok but the rear won't.

Your stock driveshaft should work fine for the rear

So will the rear driveshaft work or not? I doubt the stock prerunner driveshaft would work on a longer tranny

Did you crawl under your truck and take some measurements??

Your truck is a 99 EXTENDED CAB. The 97 is a regular cab. The only other difference is the lack of a transfer case in your 99. Plus....if you don't have the same engine or tranmission.....can also change the size of the rear shaft.

Get under there and take measurements....

Transmissions can dictate driveshaft lenghths. Same engine, same transfer.5 sp vs auto is what made my swap diff. What you are doing I know 0 about. I do have front and back from 96 2.7 4x4 auto trans if in need. Both my trucks were reg cabs.GL

ANSWER: Ext. cabs have to have the intermediate shaft shortened about 3" to accommodate the longer 5sp/4wd tranny. Auto trannies are shorter and require a different cross member mount. Crossmember mounts between 5sp and auto's (in regard to mount holes and bolts on the frame) are identical and inter-changable. Finishing my swap today!

I had two identical trucks except transmissions. Swapped 5 sp into truck that was auto. Crossmember was to far back by a few inches to mount. Took extra crossmember and bolted to side of the other, worked. Than welded extra support. Think I could have found support to mount from tundra or diff yr taco though.

And how do we know that answer? :D:D:D:D We sure tried to get different ones to fit! At least we have you an acceptable temporary transmission mount set up until you can get a more permanent solution.

They sure can. Not familiar with that on our trucks, but my 84 Camaro came with 2 different lengths. Depended if you had the 700R4 or the 200 metric auto transmission. Might have even been a 3rd one for a 5 speed manual

This might have worked if the frame mounting brackets were in the same spot but they are in different places on a tacoma. Therefore, cross members are not interchangeable but they are compatible. I hacked the center section, took a 1/2" piece of steel and put as a spacer between the two mounts, lined everything up, clamped it and welded it together. Almost factory like….As for driveshaft lengths, this is what I followed and their measurements were dead-on accurate. For me, I shortened to 31" on intermediate shaft and walla, she fit perfectly. Prerunner is now rolling all four thanks to Bamatoy's help!

Glad you finished your swap. Mine was much easier. I just sistered mine grade 8 stainless bolts and welded plates to frame and crossmember. Used stock holes and drilled threw 2nd crossmember. Moved trans mount forward to new crossmember and used 5 sp driveshaft.
