Thinking to trade in at the Toyota dealer.... Is this common? VS selling it private party and dealing with tire kickers.... We're looking to purchase either a new TRD Tacoma or new Tundra.......

A few additions to make me feel cool.
Tacoma’s hold value extremely well in pretty much any market or selling format.

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
You will always get a fair bit more private vs trade in. But a trade in is less hassle.

Check the online car buyers (like Carvana) first before selling it locally. Less hassle and good price in my experience. I wouldn't sell it at a dealer because they will always low ball you.

Be sure you sell high enough to account for tax savings you would get if you traded.

    ^^^^^^^ This!

It all depends what your time and sanity are worth to you. Yeah, private party is 2-3K$ more on the sale. But, if it's easier to you to do one stop shopping, then you have your answer.

If you get a tax break on trade in value the you probably would be better off trading. By the time you sell it to a private party it would come up around the same and you wouldn't have to worry about tire kickers. Just make sure you know what trade in value is before going to the dealership..

you are always leaving money on the table with a dealer, Go get an offer from the dealer and then add a few K to the price they give you. No one can tell you if its worth it or not.

Before you do anything, I would plug your VIN into Carmax, Vroom, and Carvana. See what it's worth before talking to the dealer. We were going to trade in my wife's 2013 honda fit sport with 62k miles on it... dealer offered $8,600, Vroom $8,600, Carvana $8,600, Carmax $12,800. I showed it to the dealer, he told me to take the money from Carmax so we did.

not in this market. They’re more likely to buy, truck unseen.

OP, I’d give private sale a shot. The used car market is an absolute sellers market.

In CA we don’t get a tax break for trade in so private party sale is the most profitable. If you don’t want tolls hassle Carmax, Carvana etc are currently paying too dollar right now for used Tacomas.

    CARVANA:

Dealer offered $14,000 on trade for 2011 Jeep Wrangler with 66,000+ miles
Carvana BOUGHT it for $19,009 with NO farting around!!!!

Thats $5,000 extra!!! Doubt if I could have got close to that private party sale. Actually, I would have been happy with $16M and likely settled for $15M.

Also depends where you live. Your 2wd will not sell well in states like Colorado. But it will sell really well in SoCal, Florida, Texas. So region does matter. But overall, times are still good for trade ins.

I've had pretty decent luck with CarGurus. You can see a value of your tacoma on their page and it'll tell you a price range to list it at. When I sold our 2008 4Runner last year, I was going to be happy selling it for $8,000. I put it on CarGurus and it told me to list it for $11,000 and I sold it for $10,250.

Like others have said, it depends on how much your time is worth to you and if you get sales tax breaks on trade in. You might make $2-3,000 more privately but you'll turn around and pay the same amount on a new one in taxes

From what i experienced selling my boats and just sold a major property we own thats been on the market for years....there's no better time than now to get your price if selling privately. Seems most are willing to pay more due do this inflation. You'd think it would be the opposite....go figure

Don't forget KBB.com, I got the best price from them on our latest trade that the dealer matched. KBB actually sends out your info to local dealers who also bid it and that's where I got the best offer, almost $4k over Carmax and $10k over Carvanna. We do get the tax break so we traded it in but we got $9k over what we paid for a 19' S5 we bought new.
