Do the 3rd gens have a true temp gauge or is it essentially a dummy light with a dial?

I’m assuming our trucks have a water temp gauge vs an oil temp gauge?

Yah, it's coolant temp, not oil

I just go by the stock gauge. Somebody smarter than me figured it out.

Geez, I haven't had an oil temperature gauge since my 1979 Scirocco. :)

I think if you pony up $80k for a diesel pickup you can still get an oil temp gauge.

I don't think it's a dummy gauge with 3 values (low, normal, high)

The needle actually can move to the left and to the right from normal temp (dead center) slightly
Like what HiPSI said, it must be a derivative and possibly throttled/smoothed value of the real temperature.
If it was ternary dummy, the needle would only point to all the way left, dead center, all the way right

    Most German cars have them.

American pick up trucks with a multi gauge cluster have it too.

Oh man this thread with a basic question is really taking off now….
I have a cheap OBdWan Kanobi II meter from China that gives live data, I should compare coolant temp data to the temp gauge which always goes to half scale and stays there.
Also been meaning to use it to monitor for any sidefumbling on my lunar wainshaft.

Export the data into excel, put it into a pivot table and correlate it with the rotation of the earth and then apply for a job a nasa.

Mine is totally restricted to use on a Tacoma and for stock market predictions.
When I shut the engine off and watch the coolant temperature I have a perfect correlation to the market.

I guess you're going to need to define "most"; I've had seven German cars since my Scirocco, two more VWs, three Audis, and two BMWs, and none of them had an oil temperature gauge.

Yup, my old Cessna had one and I'm pretty sure the newer ones I've rented have them as well.

No idea what that is; how does it qualify as "most"?.
