Do the 4 cyl motors outlast the 6?

Seems like most of the HIGH mileage I see are 4 cyl.
Seems like most of the used trucks with rebuilt or "new" motors are 6's.
And then I see the 4 holds 5+ quarts of oil vs 4 for the much larger 6.
    hmmm

    ????????????????

i think that is a fair assumption. a v6, although it only has two more cylinders, needs twice the valvetrain, and is a bit harder to cool and lubricate.

i have great faith in the 1gr though versus the 3vze and 5vze. i think this latest v6 will add to the reputation of bullet-proof motors, which i think is now all 4 cylinders. starting with the 20r

point being simply that the 1gr only requires the easy maintenance items, like oil changes, oil filters, air filters, etc.

i better stop before i break a chain or something:(

89-95 3.0 v6 had a real bad problem of blowing head gaskets every 70-90000 miles, hence the unreliable rep, where as the 4s were still the reliable choice once the v6 had a bad rep. In 95.5 the Tacoma came out with a 3.4 and that one was a lot better and longer lasting, and would consider it par with the 4s ever since, depending on how it was taken care of...

NO, and straight six last even longer than v 6. lower rpms always make an engine last longer. as well as weight to torque ratios. the littlier the motor, the harder it has to work to do the same thing.

Cant say it would matter to me even if the 4 banger did last longer. I could not tow what I need with it and I like having some extra HP on tap.

I think either will last to 200K with proper maint, which is more most will keep the vehicle for.

The frame on the other hand is only good to 125K in my area.

^I think "rust life" should be measured in years. Our Caravan lasted 13 years before chunks started falling off from the pinch weld and rocker panels; one jacking pad fell off completely.

More 4 cyl with very high mileage is probably a lot due to people expecting to drive enough to rack up that many miles will likely pick something more economical. More 6cyl with rebuilt/ replaced motors not sure what would account for that.

I would say maintenance being equal I would give the 4 banger the edge.

My wife had the 98 Sienna Van that is still going strong after > 200K miles, it was the 6 banger that was supposed to be " Sludge Prone ". I replaced a valve cover gasket at 150K miles and it looked shiny and clean as a whistle inside... That was with 3K - 4K mile dino oil changes using 4 oz Seafoam in the oil.

I had a 96 2.7 4cyl and now I have an 03 3.4 V6. I think the 4 cyl was a better motor. Felt like it had way more torque and just felt stronger. But having the extra 2 cylinders now is nice when driving around.

Haha didn't mean "way more torque" in a literal manner. Just felt like it! ;)

Haha acceleration wise my 3.4 is great in comparison. It just seems like when my 2.7 was in 4lo in 1st gear it could pull anything! My 3.4 has a lot of torque too, it just doesn't feel like as much. :notsure:

My neighbor has a 2nd gen DC with a 4.0 and he has over 200,000 miles on it, still runs like a top. Cant imagine how you could say one motor is better than the other in longevity, lots of 3.4 and 4.0 V-6's as well as 2.7's out there with over 200,000
