Do the dealerships charge for an Entune Plus software update?

Just got a 2014 with Entune Plus and I can clearly see that the Entune software has never been updated. I contacted Toyota support and the very uninformed rep said head to the dealership to get the update done. Just wondering what experiences you all have had with dealer's trying to charge or not charge a fee for this service?

Software update is free, maps update is not. Toyota hotline is pretty damn useless as well.

Good news. Thanks! yeah the young lady was pretty clueless and she seemed a bit perturbed when I exposed her ignorance, but it's all good. She learned something today, haha.

You download the Entune app on your phone, get an update and bluetooth it to your Entune

The Entune App on the phone is only compatible with Entune Audio Premium (App Suite) units. It will not support Entune Plus or the Entune Basic unit. I already checked this.

I'm not sure but I think it also requires that your phone provides a data hotspot which is common for Sprint and TMobile users, but not everyone else.

Ahh, maybe so, I have the premium head unit. Oops. It was just blue tooth, no hot spot needed.

I downloaded the Entune app and when I entered my VIN to register it said my truck model was not supported, that's how I figured it out. So the update downloads through the app using cellular data... and connects to the truck via Bluetooth, that makes sense. I'll request the update from my dealership at my next Toyota Care appt in the future. Thanks for the tips.

I'm curious what the latest software version is supposed to be. And what if any changes it implements.

I've got a 2015 so I would 'presume' mine will be more up to date than your 2014. If it's a simple USB update it would be nice if Toyota would let you download it once you register your vehicle and create an owner's account on their website.

    Not enough...
I just got an email from Toyota 2 days ago. They are updating the headunit software to get rid of Bing and add some other stupid shit. If you are expecting any major updates or interface changes, you will be disappointed. The only thing these updates do is to recognize whatever stupid apps they add to the Entune smart phone app.

For map updates you have to buy a micro sd card. It think its $149 or something like that.

Overall i'm pretty disappointed in these head units.

Yeah I'm only Entune Plus so I don't have/need Bing (would never use Bing anyhow).

I'm betting they don't even provide updates for anything less then Entune Premium since the rest of us 'poor people' don't have anything cool except XM.

Heck the Weather and Traffic apps are entirely useless anyhow unless you live in very, very specific cities to begin with.

I will post my software versions tomorrow for comparison knowing mine are the original versions shipped with the truck.

The reason they require a certified dealer visit is to prevent users from extracting the software, hacking the update module or sharing the software for download on the Internet. As was the case (I think) on this forum with the 3.1 beta version and employee uploaded. Someone could do harm with access to any truck by uploading altered software. They could prevent this using good software package design and some simple encryption but that requires a much bigger R&D budget I'd assume.

Updates usually fix bugs and UI. Occasionally a new feature is added or removed etc. but mostly you can expect UI tweaks and safety/security enhancements.

So far my Entune has worked flawlessly But the UI is really poorly designed and clearly was not tested well for QC.

As far as the weather app updating I think the software use license with the weather channel limits Toyota to specific regions for weather info hence the major cities having more accurate info.

These licenses also add limitations and exclusivity to certain services encouraging their use such as "Bing"

Why else would Toyota provide a garbage search info tool like bing if they're agreement didn't specify to do so.

I agree with most here that Entune is my biggest disappointment with the truck so far. And the lack of a tailgate lock and auto dimming mirror.

Even my 98 F-150 had a tailgate lock.

    Standby for the software versions....

Here are the OEM Entune Plus outdated software versions as displayed on the dash unit:

    Audio: 010185
    Audio System: 000072
    Dsp Module: 520020
    Sub: 010001
    Can: 130209

I'm not sure what the separate modules do, but it would also be nice to compare with some one who has an updated unit.

I believe the software has a different
I believe the software version has a different mnemonic.

Such as 3.1 is the old, the most recent is 3.2 I believe.

I think you are correct. But I could not find a 3.1 or 3.2 indicator anywhere in the system menu. I also read somewhere that they changed the software for 2014 to a very different package, but can't qualify this....

Where did you find these on your menu? I'd be curious to see how mine matches as a 2015.

Interesting. The software was designed by Panasonic. There were Copyrights as old as 1996 listed in there.

Those dates don't surprise me. Most software is designed and copyrighted years before its release or use. So looks like mine is definitely behind and needs an update. Guess I'll post back results after a dealer visit. May be a while....
