Do the spark plugs really need to be replaced at 60K miles on Gen 3?

I took these out at about 55,000 miles. It's not super easy but it's doable with out a lift and nothing like one of those 1980's Cadillac monster v-8's.

Why the iridium plugs, is that what Toyotas use? Or are they standard copper from the factory?

Change the needle bearing while you're in there, might as well.

That's what was in there. I got this 2017 in 2017 from the local ford dealer. Truck had 15,000 miles on it. I bought the spark plugs that I replaced these with from the Toyota dealer in Surprise Az. The two sets of spark plugs were the same brand and series number.

When I see the prices quoted for a plug change, I feel blessed that I got a bad tank of gas and had to put the truck in the shop for a week.
I got my fuel system flushed, injectors cleaned and plugs changed for zero $$ at 30k. Insurance and gas station footed the bill. Solved!

    Damn. That's wild. I have a 2020 - owner manual def says 60K for the 2GR-FKS engine.

Iridium and platinum plugs both burn hotter, which actually help keep them cleaner than copper plugs. I wonder if this is just some compliant emissions bullshit.

Toyota uses Iridium Spark plugs. Platinum tipped plugs are designed for 60k miles, Iridium is designed for 120k.

There are two part numbers on spark plugs. There is a Toyota 10 digit part number and there is a variable Denso part number. So you need to know which Denso spark plug you are using.

Good thread. I am only at 40k right now, but see this truck that already gets used hard get pushed more as spring arrives and animals/feed/etc need to get moved around.

I have a 2016 3.5 with 157,xxx miles, I did my spark plugs last week after I had a misfire and knew it was time to replace the plugs. Come to find out they were the original spark plugs. Ideally, you should replace them much sooner than I did but as my truck showed they can last for quite some time. I would highly recommend sticking to the stock Toyota/Denso iridium plugs. The driver's side can be quite difficult but you only really need to take off two brackets and use some extensions to get the plugs out, oh and a lotttttttt of patience.

I got a screaming deal on a set of OEM plugs from a TW member and installed them last summer at 53k. I can't say I noticed an improvement though I know the plugs I installed are tight.

My post from the spark plug thread,

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3rd-gen-tacoma-spark-plug-replacement.554468/

OP, if you do it yourself, all the info you need is in this thread. Also, go through the wheel well and it's easy to do yourself. Myself, I wouldn't bother at 60k, my truck was fine before, and after. I bought my truck new, so it was the OEM plugs I replaced.

Ya most anything on these third gens takes patience, don't have a heart attack when the dealer quotes $150 for 6 plugs either

Changing the plugs on the drivers side is not hard at all. Just push a few tubes and wires aside and you can get to all of them. 1 hour job for both banks. $3/per plug…. Save loads of money

At least that’s what my 2nd gen was. Am I missing something for the 3rd gen?

Two different engines. The 3rd gen Tacomas have the 3.5 vs the 2nd gen had the 4.0

Oh, yes. Yes, you are. The OEM Iridium spark plugs for the 3rd Gen V6 are $15+/-each from the dealer.
