Do the Toyota Dealers really intend to drive off customers?

Buy a lightly used one from someone. You may have to travel to get the one you want but, you’ll get the one you want and you’ll probably pay what is asked, maybe less if the seller is willing, but likely not more.

When I bought my 19, dealers were my last resort and excluded from the search terms. I wanted an Inferno 18 sport because in 19 they discontinued it but the more I saw Cavalry Blue pros on the road the more it grew on me and then Toyota started painting it on the the rest of the fleet.

I stumbled on mine just drinking my coffee one morning in front of my computer, 30 min away. Guy bought it, put on the $1700 Roll n lock tonneau and steps (that it still has on it), and his wife disapproved and made him sell it. I got it for $29K with 1800 miles on it. Truck was new, clock just said 1800, that was the only difference. Still driving it 4 years later and out of luck (thank you Corona BS) it’s worth and I’ve been offered $32K for it just last week.

Consider the lightly used private market in your search, you just might happen to bullseye what you’re looking for without the dealer BS.

Don't be discouraged, be motivated! There are still good deals and good dealers out there for those willing to work at finding one. It is a shame though that is isn't easier to find at least a halfway decent deal.

Preston Lindner at Freeman Toyota in Santa Rosa, CA didn't pull any sleazy sales BS back when I bought my truck. I got out the door with a discounted price and no add-on BS.

Lol, go find a 2 yr old truck with 15k miles on it

Reminds me of when I bought my (at the time) 3 year old VW from Autonation. They had something like "Door guard ghost shield - $150" or some BS like that. I smiled at my salesman and told him I wouldn't be needing that since I noticed it was already on there from the previous owner, and while he was at it he could remove everything else.

Saw this at the dealership recently in Chesapeake, VA. $4,995 for a 'Market Adjustment' and what's worse, $199 for 'pinstripes', but there weren't any pinstripes on the truck. All of their vehicles had the same $199 for pinstripes. Crazy. Happy I got mine when I did!

Totata stealerships are selling their coveted trucks for too much? Because they can.

Looked at a 2023 Honda Passport last week, 3K market adjustment & $2500 in added BS, it’s all over for desired vehicles. Widen your search, it’s just a road trip or plane ticket away…

Just bought my first Tacoma 2 days ago. Have wanted one for a long time and finally did it. I have been actively looking for about a year, online and at dealerships. Here in NC and VA they are trying to charge a market adjustment of around $5000. I told every salesman I have dealt with that I will not be paying that. 2 days ago a local dealer had the exact truck I have been looking for on their lot which is unusual around here for an off road model. On the test drive I told him I would not be paying the market adjustment and I didn't. I did however pay MSRP to the exact dollar, which I was fine with being as car sales are the way they are right now. I had a great experience with this establishment and my salesman. Might be the dealer you went to.

The Toyota stealerships in south Florida are all pretty difficult to deal with. They all want MSRP plus the appearance packages, etc. At least they don’t tack on market adjustments. Problem is, any Taco that comes in that is not pre-sold disappears within a few days.

I can't see myself purchasing a new Toyoyta. Have you considered purchasing another brand?

in my experience, most car salesman are that way. there are a few good ones. the first one i made contact with at the dealer was an a-hole, and talked about the need for this, that, blah bah blah.

i went to the SM and told him what i was looking for and willing to pay, and if they couldn't accommodate me i was going elsewhere. he assigned an older and more knowledgeable salesman to work with me and i was satisfied with the deal that was below msrp, and the value for my trade-in was fair. there was no push for an extended warranty or other add-ons. the salesman even followed me home in my original truck and helped me remove the canopy which i made clear was not part of the trade-in.

it helps to have a plan B and be willing to walk.

Findlay Flagstaff, when I bought my 2022 TRD Offroad Double Cab, there was no mark up and no add On's, just paid MSRP plus taxes. I don't know if it is still that way, but 1 year ago it was. I did not buy one on the lot, I bought one that was on order prior to being built, 6 weeks later I had my truck. Like others have said, different dealerships do different things and have different lies they tell you. Always check with multiple dealerships prior to buying, some are much better than others.

Some say, "If you want a new vehicle which is in demand, simply bend over, spread'em, and walk in backwards." Others say, "Shop around".

In my case, there are 4 Toyota dealerships within a 20-mile radius of where I live; last February I visited all four, three were doing the Market Adjustment thing for between $4,000 and $7,000 for the TRD Sport 6MT I was looking for, the fourth is an exclusively MSRP (or below) dealership for all vehicles. Yeah, I bought from the fourth for MSRP.

I was also super frustrated when I first started shopping for my new taco last year. Patience, and shopping around as others noted, and willingness to wait for inventory in the build phase finally got me to a comfortable experience. I'm not in your region but nice to see folks are pointing you towards the better dealerships around you. I think I even saw a list someone put together of dealership practices someone was tracking. The most egregious I read about is is the hidden markups, I did not find any of those in my search but that sounds fraudulent. If you have a truck to trade in or sell, the upside of this market is what you will get for your replacement in this market, over Kelly Blue Book. Good luck.
