Do used Tacomas cost more than new?

    I saw a used 2017 listed for $39k.
Isn't that what a new truck costs?

If Taco doesn't depreciate, why would anyone buy used?
New is either cheaper or same?

They depreciate, but not like grandma's Cadillac.
Just because something is listed @ 39K doesn't mean it will sell for 39K.
That said, it's not a buyer's market at the moment, new or used.

I just paid $38k for an 18 Limited with 24k miles. Same truck new is $43k. In hindsight I should have just bought new because the used price is so high, but it is what it is. Like jmneill Said “it’s not a buyers market new or used” supplies are tight in many areas due to COVID.

if you're looking for something 3 years old or newer with reasonable miles, it makes zero sense to buy used. better deals and cheaper finance on new, plus the taco's outstanding residual values compound an already stretched wholesale used car market price. I just bought a '21 TRD OR for about 10% off, which put it within about $1500 away from most of the comparable used ones I saw in my region. Just my opinion...if you can swing the price of a new one and find a competitive dealer, that's the smart way to go.

Ok, so at least you saved $5k off the cost of new.
There is at least logic there.
What I don't get is how a used truck costs same/more than a new truck

Ahh, ok, this is a case where $10k of mods may add value to a certain buyer,
which could make the used truck cost more than a new one with no mods.

Again, who is buying a used truck if it's only $1500 less than new.
Is there information asymmetry? Do used buyers not know the MSRP?
Are they banned from the dealership?

COVID killed the market. Right now its pretty much a better bet to buy new. However inventory is low and there aren’t many incentives. Also don’t expect dealers to wheel and deal right now.

Depends on what part of the country you're in. I had to drive a few hours, but saw almost the exact perfect build I was looking for sitting on a dealer's lot and inquired via email mainly to see if it was actually still available and, if so, what sort of deal they would offer. I was surprised to get a response within an hour offering right around 10% off. More surprising because they bill themselves as a "no haggle" dealership. Sold! I didn't think I could have negotiated near that off the price on my own. Slight hassle of having to drive several hours, but well worth it.

@Lawfarin is right about COVID killing the market overall. Low supply for used ones wholesale for dealer inventory plus damn near best residual value of any vehicle on sale today means you're just not gonna see many good deals on used. I wouldn't be surprised if some dealers have one or two on the lot advertised for all the money and refuse to budge at all on the price to make the new car more of a value proposition. Classic upsell in any retailer's game to a degree...you can get this good one here, but for just a few bucks more you can get the "better" one.

In 2018 I bought my brand new 2018 TRD OR without the tech package out the gate for 33k. I think prices have everything to do with area instead of reasonable priced. Here in Louisiana most people don’t go for a Tacoma, they go for Jeep or full sized truck. So tacomas here are priced to move so dealerships don’t sit on them. Now I’ve priced trucks of the same spec in Texas, it was on average 6-7k more for some reason. Now my trucks sticker was like 36-37 if I remember right, but they wanted to sell, and coming down to 33 was very reasonable. Now, for some reason the first gens in my area are fucking crazy priced, 220k beater sr5 4wd go for around 3-5k and the lower mileage ones go for even higher.

I'm curious, where did you find the used 2017?

Having purchased an 18 Tacoma this year as well as a brand new 20 4Runner I can say the flip side to the COVID problem as far as car buying goes is that trade in values are through the roof. We traded an 18 Highlander and a 12 Tundra and did very well with minimal haggling.

All depends on if you paid MSRP for new or inflated value used. An item is worth what someone is willing to pay.

I picked up my used 2019 OR with 23K miles at the end of May for $29K. I felt like that was a decent deal on a used tacoma. Or am I wrong?

I bought my 2016 Limited Black 4x4 in Jacksonville, FL about a year ago driving from Central Florida to get it for 28K. It had 63k miles on it and was in really good shape.2016 Toyota Tacoma Dipped.jpg

You can get a new Taco right now for nearly the same cost as some used ones. End of the year driving their sales of total units and rebates on 2021 and 2020 models.

Again. How? Why would anyone pay the same price for used as for new?
Is there a lottery for new ones, so the losers need to buy a used one for the same price, since they don't have a choice?

I just looked and it said $40,200 for new but mine had side steps and the Tacoma bed cover so probably closer to $42,000 would be my estimate.

Market was this way before COVID, fellas.

My Tacoma depreciated $400 after 4 years and 58k miles.
