    Very possibly, yes.

The other possibility is that somewhere at some point, someone in your company actually purchased an FCC license, which covers the company as a whole and all of the employees thereof.

I work for a local City government and we use government band radios, which the City is licensed for, but each of us individuals don't need to be licensed as long as the organization has the proper license.

yea you arent supposed to modify CB's in any way, or amplify them. though everyone does it... kind of like adultery.

Mobile CB radios are legally allowed to transmit at up to 4 watts in AM and 12 watts in SSB mode. Amateur radio licensees are allowed to transmit at up to 1,500 watts  within the frequencies allocated to them according to their level of licensing. Amateur radio operators are also allowed to build and modify their own equipment withing certain parameters also.

Because they are handhelds, the range is very very limited. Within 1 mile. No repeaters or anything. So its not like we are using the entire frequency world wide. Its just like a 2-way radio or walki-talki. I dont know much about this ham thing yet, my interest just started this seek. But I've been using these radios for over a year. We pick up some other radio traffic sometimes, but only by other really nearby facilities using the same radios. I work for a security company if that helps understand my use of the radio. Its a very localized use of the radio and that just happens to be the channel we are on. Its the default channel on the Kenwood protalk tk-3200. We communicate with regal because that's one of our accounts. I just want a ham that I can use off road at meets, also use to scan local police channels, and most importantly I want a unit that can communicate with our work radios

I know i just wanted to be as clear as possible
    just incase

I'll buy one if its really that helpful. I don't want to spend $400 on a radio that doesn't serve my needs

However, the FCC (which carefully police amateur radio) says amateur operators must use the lowest power possible. Handheld amateur radios often have no more power output (1~5 watts) than a CB radio (4 watts AM, 12 watts SSB), with much more limited range (due to the higher frequencies) without the use of repeaters (not always possible when well off-road or in very remote areas). Mobile amateur radios (2m, 440, etc) are often limited to less than 100 watts (50~75 watts), with the higher frequencies again limiting range. HF radios used in mobile applications are, at best, cumbersome (large and/or complex antennas, etc). In every case, an amateur radio will cost far more than a CB radio.

i bought both my Yaesu FT-2800m radios for 125 bucks each, about ten dollars more then what i paid for my Cobra 29 CB radio. guess what type of radio performs better lol? Jasmines 5w hand held duel bander can hit repeaters as far as 40+ miles away. even in simplex mode her hand held will outreach a typical CB

every one in my 4wd club including most other rock crawling clubs in SoCal all have modded HAM/race radios because of the better audio quality and superior range over a typical CB radio. even all of the desert pre-runner clubs and race organizers run race/modded HAM radios. but we have gone around this before in the past in your recovery gear topic to no avail.

Depending on how old the manual is. The FCC releases a new question pool for each exam on a rotating three year basis. The technician exam was either just refreshed this year or or will be next year, I can't remember. I know that my tecnician manual is now out of date.

The Yaesu FT-2800M is now discontinued (see here). Amazon sells the Cobra 29 LTD for $90, a full $35 less than the $125 you paid for the Yaesu FT-2800M. Universal Radio is selling the Yaesu FT-2900R (successor to the FT-2800M) for $175 with an introductory rebate of $25 ($150 after rebate).

Other option and is the best of both worlds is 6 meters ( 50-54MHz) I have a number of friends /off-roaders that use 6meters and we have found range and power to be very useful without the trucker/powertalker noise on CB.

Installed the Cobra 75 WX ST today! It is awesome, blows all the other cb's I've had out of the water, as far as receiving and transmitting, I'm getting like 5-10 miles out of it on a 2' firestik.... Crazy
