One time, I desperately and unexpectedly needed to grind through some serious steel, and would otherwise be vehicle-less. Broke out a small Dremel and slowly but surely solved the problem. To this day, I thank it for its service.

What's your favorite tool, and why?

I couldn't rate types of tools in that manner. I could say that I prefer a *quality* tool to a cheap piece of junk, but fact is that every tool has its place and purpose.

Maybe we could put it this way; my favorite tool depends on what job I'm trying to do, and that favorite would be the "right tool for the job".

Not trying to get philosophical. Just trying to get people to share what tools they find to be extremely useful. Some tools serve as "the right tool for the job" for many, many jobs.

Gear wrenches. Fit in tight spaces, and work. Never replace sockets, but they work and work well, and given a choice of just one type of wrench, that would be it.

x2 on this, I use the heck out of my gear wrenches. I kinda thought they would be gimmicky at first, but they have been well worth the investment.

Years ago we had on-site engineers from IBM at our computer center. I remember more than once where one of them would say to the other, go get the "forming tools" and the other would return with a big pair of channel locks and a hammer. :)

My impact. Has quickly taken off nuts/bolts that a 4ft cheater bar couldn't. Plus I can toss it in my truck on road trips incase I get a flat and want to change the tire fast. I also have an adapter that I made to attach to the rod for the OE jack so I don't have to crank it by hand <lazy.

Another Fav, just bought a Craftsman C3 1/2 inch Cordless impact and it's my go-to for wrenching here and there. Makes tire rotations a breeze.
I won a $150 Sears gift card at work so the impact only cost me 13 bucks!
