when you put the clutch in or tap the break it disengages the cruise. if you are in an area that requires a downshift for a hill, you might be better served just running the gas with your foot

if you are going up that steep of hill, you are most likely going to come down a steep hill which will also require a lower gear. best to put both the manual or auto into the correct gear for the grade and avoid cruise alltogether for that stretch of driving.

or leave cruise on and ride your brakes, like so many idiots do. not that you are an idiot. ha

hmm. I've never used it. Each time I've been on a flat open road where you can do the same speed for more than 3 miles, we took someone else's vehicle.

I hate cruise. It makes my truck downshift unnecessarily

Don't miss the stress of not having it. It's dark when I go to work, there's a constant line of headlights coming at me on a 2-lane, and it's too much eyestrain to be looking up/down at the road and speedo while trying to look for wildlife.

Mileage didn't go down much using it and since I'm immune to random downshift syndrome relatively stress-free. Best mod I've done, hands down.

I like it enough and do enough highway driving that I wouldn't buy a vehicle without it.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I couldn't imagine long road trips without it! Since I have a 5 speed no need to worry about it shifting either! It pulls most hills fine in 5th, only have to downshift on the really steep or long ones.

I love using cruise control, but it doesn't get as good MPG's as my foot does.

I would not buy a vehicle without cruise control. I do a lot of highway driving and use it almost everyday.

It's the same as if you stepped on the gas more and more to maintain speed up a hill. The trans will downshift when it needs to to fight to maintain enough torque to hold a set speed. The trans will not allow the engine to overspeed.

My opinion is that the new autos trans have too many speeds. I mean 7 and 8 speed autos, in certain cars, its very annoying to have it frequently shifting. Although some people put the car in Drive and are oblivious to what the car does. I think this makes the transmissions too complex and therefore prone to breakdowns. What needs to be done is some company engineer a very reliable Continuously Variable Trans, so the engine runs at its optimum rpm. I am thinkin a lot of weight could be saved over a 7 or 8 speed trans.

The question was about MANUAL transmission, and I'm pretty sure the question was already answered, but CC will automatically disengage when you depress the clutch or brake...so you don't have to physically cancel it, but it does stop controlling speed until you manually resume or reset it.

As a manual driver for years, I usually just get myself at a comfortable speed and turn CC on. Generally, at highway speeds, I'm normally only downshifting because (a) I'm heading up a steep incline and need more power or (b) need to slow the vehicle due to traffic...and in either case I'd probably be cancelling the CC in an auto anyway because at that point I want to be controlling the throttle/engine gear. Once I'm able to get back up to cruising speed and in gear, I just resume CC again.

I suppose you could also make an argument for a 3rd scenario which is to drop a gear to accelerate and/or pass, but again, chances are if you are driving that aggressively, CC isn't going to be part of the picture anyway...I mean even in 6th gear at 70mph using CC, I can still hit the gas to get past other motorists and change lanes if I need to without gearing down.

Bottom line: Using cruise control at highway speeds is pretty much the same in a standard vs. automatic, if not better because the tranny won't downshift at unwanted times. At lessor speeds it probably works better in the automatic that can shift as needed, but frankly I don't even think of using CC until I'm cruising on the highway, so no big deal for me.
