    It's the wife's T4R so it's stock
Here's my solution to re-bag the salt so I don't have any issues down the line.

I bought a space bag at wal-mart (jumbo size)

Stuffed them in there and vacuumed the air out. They keep out air, dirt, and moisture.

How thick is the plastic that the bags are made of? How does the plastic handle the cold? I have seen some plastic bags that get real brittle when the temperature drops.

I keep my bags of salt in garbage bags but the plastic is not that thick and they do tear.

This plastic is thicker than a garbage bag -- We'll see how it handles the cold, etc.

You're not leaving it in 4wd when you drive on dry pavement are you? I think that's hard on the system, plus it reduces your fuel economy. I notice from the ScanGaugeII that there is roughly a 3-4 mpg difference between 2 and 4wd under similar driving conditions. Anyone else have any specific observations along those lines?

No I don't leave it in 4 wheel drive on the dry roads. There's no point to it only when there's snow or ice:cool:

2 wheels drive on dry roads 4x4 on anything over 4 inches. Truck likes it better, Still have 400 pounds in the bed. It helped allot. Truck still is not very good on the highway in any acumulation of snow. I drive smart in the winter not fast.

Yep, 2 60lb tube sand-bags, one next to each wheelwell, they stay in place on thier own. I could probably get around fine without them on the ice, but I'd rather not find out the expensive way. They sit in the garage 360 days a year...

You might want to be careful with those blocks. I have heard of horror stories about blocks coming through the back window and removing heads.

I have had my 07 taco prerunner for two winters here in the northwest. Last year I just put chains on, actually cables. This year I started to do the same thing and I got tired of it. No weight just cables. I only needed to put them on to get out of our mile long up and down hill driveway. It has rock on it but a lot of clay mud areas as well. I usually only need it for about a 100' strech near the top of the driveway. Then I have to stop and remove the cables so they don't fly off and damage my truck. This year I did this twice allready and I got tired of it.

I went down to the local tire store and put a set of Toyo open country MT tires on all four and purchased a bag for the bed. The bag covers most of the bed and you fill it with water. It has points to lash it to the bed so it does not slide back and forth. It will take up to 500 lbs of weight on top of it, and it adds about 200 lbs of weight to your bed.

now i voted no because of 4x4, but the other night i was going 25 mph in a 55 and i couldn't keep my back end on the ground. so with that i'm off to buy some sand bags because i can't scare my girlfriend like that again.

i am no newbie to snow driving either, slow and steady wins the race

My father in law had 500lbs of coal in his Dodge Ram and couldn't get out of a Wal-Mart parking lot during a storm last week without putting it in 4WD. I had 180lbs of sand in mine a couple winters ago and it made no apparent difference. So I don't bother with weight now. If the roads look questionable 4WD comes on and sometimes ABS goes off shortly thereafter.

I think tires make more of a difference than weight. Not to mention, sometimes whatever you use for weight gets in the way of using the bed.

For those that really want a nice way to increase weight in the rear of their Tacomas, try a product called Shurtrax. This product sells for about $120 dollars and contains a bladder that is filled with water. The bladder can support up to 500 lbs of weight being placed on top of it. Shurtrax provides great traction on any road surface.
