Do you read the Tacoma Owner's Manual?

Discussion in '3rd Gen. Tacomas (2016-2023)' started by shootsright, Dec 5, 2018.

?

Do you read the owner's manual?

  1. Yes. In order to get the most value, use and ability out of my Tacoma.

  2. No. What's an owner's manual?

  3. I only read the important parts, i.e. engaging 4x4, MTS, locking diff etc.

  4. Only when something in my Tacoma is beeping and/or flashing.

  5. Meh, it's no page turner and I'm familiar enough.

The Tacoma I picked up recently is the most advanced car I've personally owned. Per recommendation of my mechanic friend and wanting to know more about functions like MTS, cruise control, maintenance, etc. I decided to start reading. Full disclosure I started with the exciting items and have been bouncing around. There is a bounty of valuable information in there as well as common sense topics. It's more thorough than what the dealer provides in terms of operation at the point of sale.

The reason for this poll is the VDR system. Are people aware of this?

Wow. Reading stuff like this makes me want to never buy a new car.

I'm aware that it would be naive to not think this is the case, but damn. Toyota and 3rd parties could be able to extrapolate all kinds of info.

I wonder if 1st gen Tacos have VDR.

/Tried making the poll mutually exclusive and exhaustive.

Do you read the terms and service agreements every time you sign up for something?

Yup. No different than carrying a phone these days. I used to be a foil head, even considered ripping the PoS OnStar bits out of our saab. Then, I got a Blackberry in 2006. . .

You missed a choice in the poll: What manual? That's what posting on forums is all about.

I mean, there already has been data breaches with my SS I'm sure on top of who knows what else. There is no such thing as privacy anymore other than just closing your curtains. I figure whatever info people find out of me won't be that interesting anyway.

Exactly. In the end, if things go sideways, the collected data could save your bacon. There was a situation or two when I wish that I had an event recorder and access to the data.

It is a bit creepy, but Google Timeline is a pretty freaking stellar tool.

Do I wish we had a true right to privacy? Sure. But, that ain't happening anytime soon.

Buddy has and OBDII reader connected to an app on his phone that tracks every little thing he does with his car. He was saved by it in court because of the data collected. Saved alot of money and points on the license.

I don't claim to read everything, be a foil hat wearer, or be naive to think that information is being shared. Just kind of eye opening to know there is a constant stream of data coming out of my truck. That's all.

I had to look up what the "cold outside temperature" warning icon was. Really, Toyota, do we need that?

If everyone did, we would have a considerably "smaller" forum here.

so whatcha gonna do? Return the truck, get a 1978 Ford 150.

With tech of today everything is being shared or potentially used. We had a Alexa and we noticed ads on our computer that correlated to what we were discussing when Alexa was on. We (wifey & I) tested this by speaking about dildos and such - sure enough we got some weird ads on our computer. No more Alexa....

Yup, someone did this research a while back by discussing alot about cat food without actually owning cats. Sure enough, ads for cat food everywhere.

As long as there is no browser history for the SO to find, that's all I care about.

I have no plans on returning my truck, it's the second best car I've owned.

The phone = truck is more true than I would have liked to believe. Yikes.

Yet it's reasonable to think that if more people knew the depths/type of data collecting it may give pause to purcha....................yeah right who am I kidding.

I'm now curious about the capabilities/limits of the data transmission. Who's going to come up with the mod that stops the data collection/transmitting? Maybe a faraday cage on the roof fin? Perhaps a foil hat for the roof? "No more Alexa," precisely.

Also, given that nothing is hack-proof, it strikes me as a bit reckless on the part of Toyota. 21st Century odometer resetting.

A better topic would be “do you read post in Tacoma world or search before posting?”

This event recorder has been discussed many times.

It's sometimes annoying to have to sift through alot of BS though to find an answer. It's easier sometimes just to post and hope someone patient will provide an answer or a link to the answer.

But this post in general holds nothing of value anyway so just let it be.

It is not your truck that is transmitting the data. I am 99% certain that it is your phone and the Entune app. Don't connect the phone and you are good.

That does not stop the recording of data on board that can be read via the OBD port, but it is not an active feed.
