Do you read the Tacoma Owner's Manual?

Discussion in '3rd Gen. Tacomas (2016-2023)' started by shootsright, Dec 5, 2018.

?

Do you read the owner's manual?

  1. Yes. In order to get the most value, use and ability out of my Tacoma.

  2. No. What's an owner's manual?

  3. I only read the important parts, i.e. engaging 4x4, MTS, locking diff etc.

  4. Only when something in my Tacoma is beeping and/or flashing.

  5. Meh, it's no page turner and I'm familiar enough.

I think what most folks miss is that the manuals can be downloaded and text searched on a computer. That would be a lot easier than setting up a TW account.

Does anyone know for sure how the information gets transmitted from our trucks? Is it through the app on our phone, does our truck try to find open wifi signals? Is it only when brought in for service?

anybody actually know? The manual is vague on that, right?

Yeah.. makes sense. I think I’ll quit using the search button from now on.

We need more threads like this:

“what’s the biggest tire size I can fit”, “cheap and best 2” leveling kit”, “need more low end power”, “my transmission sucks and shifts a lot, help”

Too true. Which is also a contributing factor to helping out in a lot of these threads.

Soooooo . . . about those wiper blades.

I get it. But there's no point in being sour over it (not saying you are). But it's better to just ignore the thread and not respond. Or better yet just be helpful.

Heck man, if you want to dive deep into it, technically were leasing our homes even though we have mortgages. Once we move out theres a chance we gain or lose equity. And when we die it just moves on to the next guy until it's too old and gets replaced.

I had a dongle that I got from my insurance company that monitored various aspects of my driving for 3 months, and then I got a decent discount. It transmitted the data via what I assume was wifi because there was no app, and if I could see the results relatively quickly after it logged it through a website.

I kind of assume the same might be true for the trucks. Something that transmits only when an open wifi signal comes available. but I don't really know.

The app on my phone is pretty much useless for me now that they took integrated Pandora away. I'm likely going to delete it anyway.

My bet is the dongle itself had wifi and transmitted over an open connection? I always wanted to try one of those since I'm a stickler for stop signs, stop lights, and turn signals. But, I have this problem with the speed limit other than in school zones. It is at least 10mph too slow. I know!

You should have been able to see the SSID unless they hid it? Those insurance adapters work on all OBD cars.

To continue the aside... my insurance (liberty mutual) only cataloged fast starts or fast decelerations and if I drove after 1am (maybe 2am, maybe midnight, can't remember specifically). Both my wife and I did it, and we basically got the same discount (17% I think) even though we had different stats.

I never sniffed for an SSID. The only other option I can think of is it had something like a sim card and transmitted via cell towers periodically.

OT is the best direction most times.

That is interesting. I'm crap with the math side of statistics, but I would like to know what really goes into actuarial tables. I imagined that it would have logged about a hundred more data points than those. Of course, a lot of that comes at a balance to get folks to try it along with continuing adoption. WA is trying something similar for road taxes. Which is a whole other, nastier tangent.

Oh. I didn't think of cellular. Definitely possible there.

OP, I've posted on this very topic.

    Yes, Big Brother is watching.
